Hmm.

This might be a great opportunity for self-help authors in Britain. Here are my suggestion for titles: "Three Weeks to 'Loving' Your Wife", "How to Woo Your Wife", "What to do When Your Marriage of Convenience Isn't As Convenient As You Want It To Be." If Thomas had one or two of those on his nightstand, he could have indulged in some implied conjugal relations much sooner...and at his age, the sooner the better.Betty Debbiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16446092401692468002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-16918865941327393832010-12-02T21:50:49.136-08:002010-12-02T21:50:49.136-08:00LOLLOLAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-73850612529843993682010-12-02T19:04:18.139-08:002010-12-02T19:04:18.139-08:00Could we spare a word or three for the fact that B...Could we spare a word or three for the fact that Betty was 90 when she wrote this? In fact, the most poignant bit is where she, uh, sorry -- where Claudia describes the geriatric hospital as a place where the patients just have no one to care for them at home.

I really choked up there (no lie) because it had a ring of truth -- and more specifically a truth that Betty herself may have endured. Because while we'd love to think she was completely hale and hearty up to the point she "assumed room temperature," I'm pretty sure that some of those books where the English nurse is caring for an older woman in a wheelchair had a bit of roman a clef about them.

Thomas gets most of the blame for not getting the job done. What self-respecting 39-year-old man marries a gorgeous redhead and doesn't think, just for a moment, that perhaps Implied Marital Relations might be A Good Thing? You know, not NOW precisely, but eventually. And not eventually eventually, but sooner than later.

I read this book on the way here (we're in Orlando for the whole Disney Experience) and I realized I'd completely screwed up. We were in line for the Finding Nemo ride (which closed about 3 minutes after we got on line so we never did see it) in Epcot when a teenage girl ahead of us took a photo of her Nightmare Before Christmas doll. Oh, I thought, I should have my Betty here so I can take Betty-at-Epcot photos. She would have looked so good at the German Biergarten. I could have taken her picture next to the Alpenhorns...!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-51082012558428245172010-12-02T14:11:51.452-08:002010-12-02T14:11:51.452-08:00It is that kind of book...not overly memorable.
