I liked neither the heroine nor the hero. The book was one giant argument.
Eduard was outwardly indifferent--just like most Neels heroes--but to the point of projecting dislike. And Jenny didn't realize he loved her? Please.
Jenny was battle cat, even if she does have a heart of gold. She'll turn out to be just like Aunt Bess--crabby on the outside and soft on the inside. Besides targeting Eduard, did you notice how she flew at that lazy, self-important sister Celia? "Oh, but I am--sick of you." Not but she didn't deserve it, but Jenny lacked the nobler self-restraint of the usual Neels protagonist. Even Aunt Bess ("I've just told you I'm not a child!") and Margaret (seething "Is Oliver asleep?") were fair targets.
She and Eduard might have a HEA, but it will be a tumultuous happiness. Betty Neels did foreshadow this early in the book when fellow nurse Clare said, "Who wants to be comfortable? Chris and I fight a bit...and we're only engaged. Heaven knows what it'll be like when we marry, but it'll never be dull."
Jenny does have some redeeming qualities: self-sacrificing, super with kids, tolerant up to a point.Betty Luluhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17634519999898307583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-85012858251875528242011-09-26T19:54:28.875-07:002011-09-26T19:54:28.875-07:00Where Betty Jo Dee comes out of left field and nai...Where Betty Jo Dee comes out of left field and nails Jeff Chandler. Well, not literally, but considering this post had a totally different cover guy, I'm impressed you made the connection. Don't google image his name.
Someone with the same name has put perverse photos up.

I just finished the book. And I'm still not sure if I like it. Weird. Maybe it's because these two are bound to bicker and argue their life long. Prof K and I have a not quite but similar dynamic. It makes life interesting but can get exhausting. Lots of fighting and making up. So, because it strikes me as true to life, I liked it.
Janet/Jenny does have two personalities to match her two names. I have a mother/daughter team of relatives with these names. Janet was the ultimate care taker mom, nurturing wife. Jennifer was the little spoiled princess.

The Janet in our Jenny takes over long enough to submit to marriage, but watch out once they are married. Jenny is in there and she's coming back.
Eduard - I don't think we get any back story or a reason why he's so irascible. He's forty and unmarried and crotchety. And evidently he likes messing with peoples heads. He gives her no reason why he let her believe he was marrying Margaret. Or why he played Margaret's cruel guessing game at the end.
Unlike Betty Keira, the I hate you's don't bother me. I remember emotion like that even after I married. We know she doesn't mean it, and he deserves to be dissed.
I also thought the end could have come sooner.
So I'm thinking 7, which after looking is mince pie. I can't stand mince pie, but this book wasn't so bad.BettyMaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12676458096380002508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-53379452194048643792011-09-26T14:58:00.575-07:002011-09-26T14:58:00.575-07:00Thank you, Betty Mary!
