It could be that Betty experienced that type of remark between girls it at her all girls post WW1 boarding school or in the rather cloistered world of Nursing that she experienced in her early adult life. In our modern and more sensitive world its difficult to understand the type of casual bullying that was the norm in the early and middle years of the last century.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-16258573432808845682020-11-13T20:27:45.032-08:002020-11-13T20:27:45.032-08:00I think “The Giles Effect “ made me like this one ...I think “The Giles Effect “ made me like this one more than most of you. The ironing really impressed me. But what I really want to know is this: Is it a Brit thing, a Dutch thing, or merely a Betty thing that allows friends and strangers alike to tell someone that they are “plain”, “have no looks” or simply “aren’t pretty “? It happens again and again in Betty’s books, but I can’t imagine anyone really being that rude, especially to someone they’ve just met. I’d be pretty grumpy, too! In that first interview with Giles(before she knows who he really is)-she's trying to be serious, he's being cheeky-of course she snorted!(I would have rolled my eyes or glared at him!). But her decision to dislike him and then keep on disliking him(the dinner party scene)was annoying. But the hero found her enchanting--I'm not sure why.
To me she was generic Neels heroine--a bit dim with a penchant for jumping to conclusions.
I loved Giles, though. And I loved the whole totally improbable bit of Giles and Sir Whatshisname doing the washing up. I do believe this is the only strike by hospital workers that Betty works into her stories.
It was great seeing Sappha and Rolf again. And loved the scene towards the end where Sappha has to cross the t's and dot the i's for Giles and Antonia.
So I'll go better than Cheese Board, but not by much--Madeira Cake, I think.Barb in Marylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11374278685536530837noreply@blogger.com
