Usually I just lurk, but I decided that had to chime in here on this one since its one of the few I've read recently enough on which to have an opinion.

@Barb in Maryland - I agree the forgotten dress does tend to throw you out of the book while reading. I wonder if there was a scene in which the dress was ruined in some way that got cut out of the book. Never the less, one would think she could have replaced the dress on one of her many shopping trips with Charity.

@Francesca - I can't believe you don't like Lady Merrill. I loved her. She knows what's up with Aldrik before he does and messes with him just enough to keep him thinking about Cressida.

Although it's not my favorite Betty Neels book. I do think it has its charms.

KathyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-36748426375778458582013-04-08T17:49:29.438-07:002013-04-08T17:49:29.438-07:00For some reason I always remembered this one.
I ...For some reason I always remembered this one.

I like that she is a Cinderella even though I hate the stepmother.

I like her self-lessness for dear Moggy. So loyal and true. Shows a noble wonderful character who knows what's what.

I didn't like Lady Merril the grandmother...I thought she was selfish and mean, even though BN thought she wasn't.

The evil-Aunt in Holland is just plain horrible. Worse than the stepmother even. But very believable. I think there are women just like that in Holland. Hah!

Betty FrancescaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-26979461800366776332013-04-08T17:34:25.159-07:002013-04-08T17:34:25.159-07:00Betty Barbara here--

But I do recall my bemusement over the vanishing red velvet dress. (So obvious that The Great Betty did NOT have an attentive editor!!). Otherwise, the only thing this book has going for it is the cover of the original edition--the hair! the clothes! the so-not-right version of the RDD!!Barb in Marylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11374278685536530837noreply@blogger.com
