Thanks for the Wiki-paragraph....Hi, Betty Barbara,

Thanks for the Wiki-paragraph. I remember a well known cooking show host remarking that in Ancient Greece students hung sprigs of rosemary behind their ears for better memory.
I should have done that myself, for I had it all wrong. Last night, when I came home I looked up that quote in Uncertain Summer. In order to find it faster I looked at my annotations and there I found added at a later date in another colour pen (volume)31 and the pagenumber, "Mrs. Rosemary Brown". So at one point I had made the connection - and then clean forgot about it again. And it was Serena who asked what were the twins names, Sarah who said, "The boy's Hugo of course" - of course! - "the girl's Rosemary", and then her husband Hugo setting down the tea tray - love it how they always do that - said, "For a very special reason. But the next daughter will be Sarah." And then it is actually Gijs who says, in a soft voice, "Ah, yes. Rosemary for remembrance."
Betty AnonymousAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-91499090422020777552011-11-15T17:38:43.504-08:002011-11-15T17:38:43.504-08:00Betty Barbara here--

Mourners would throw it into graves as a symbol of remembrance for the dead. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia says, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance." (Hamlet, iv. 5.) A modern study lends some credence to this reputation.

So our Betty does a clever bit of word play--getting a double meaning out of 'Rosemary'. Pretty neat, right?Barb in Marylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11374278685536530837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-86246578305401377462011-11-15T13:06:35.978-08:002011-11-15T13:06:35.978-08:00"Rosemary for remembrance"

(at least I think they were asked) in Uncertain Summer - which I have read many many times.
Thank you for clearing that up for me. It had me puzzled every time I read it.
Betty AnonymousAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-37567522986369682072011-11-10T20:48:22.446-08:002011-11-10T20:48:22.446-08:00This is my very favorite Betty book! I can't help wondering, however, what Hugo was thinking when, when, after cancelling Sarah's plane reservation at the last minute and then returning after a 3 week absence with the woman he was once engaged to, what poor Sarah would make of all this. The woman who apparently left him and emigrated to the States. He even admits it might be rather reckless of him, but he assumes Sarah will understand? Men can be such blockheads sometimes!Suzannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11731998857232760942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-56761462179531254562011-11-08T05:34:00.704-08:002011-11-08T05:34:00.704-08:00Thank you.
