Queen Beatrix “acceded” in 1980, so the change was made pretty quickly. Friso kept treating her like she had been playing ball for years, flirting over cocktails with high-flying consultants and batting down presumptuous housemen, when in reality she was pretty shy and earnest and solemn.

Anyway, his treatment just didn't add up to it looking like he knows her at all. But I agree that she is pretty cool.Keirahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12334172370385784966noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-90060666987439040512011-05-23T11:50:49.520-07:002011-05-23T11:50:49.520-07:00I have a great fondness for this book, which is ei...I have a great fondness for this book, which is either the reason I remember it fairly well, or I remember it well because I'm fond of it. (Discuss.)

I think it's intended to demonstrate the problems Good Looking People have when they fall in love like us mere mortals. In theory, it should be smooth sailing in a botter, but instead it's this weird game of reverse chicken. Who's going to break cover first and admit to love-cum-vulnerability to the other?

Seen in the context of The Entire Canon, I think Harriet comes closest to being in the same weight class as her hero, so to speak. She knows she's attractive (Neels' heroines always discount their own looks by at least 20%) and popular, but she also knows that Friso might simply be the one who doesn't fall for her. He's presumably feeling pretty much the same thing -- she hardly bats her eyelashes at him, y'know, with that unmistakeable come-hither message -- so it's a bit of a stand-off.

They finally spend enough time together to get on the same wavelength, which is why we need a serpent in Eden.

On sheer "you go, girl" gumption, Harriet's one of my favorite heroines even if this isn't one of my favorites in The Canon.Magdalenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11551590278859598110noreply@blogger.com
