Sir William is ...We care very little for this one. Sir William is terribly passive aggressive and immature whose maternal figure is all too willing to condone this behaviour. Wanda made a lucky escape. He wishes to break the engagement but rather than having that conversation he engages in such petty behaviour-the muddy hike, serving appalling food and throwing her in the way of any male acquaintance he has. Let us not even begin with the purchasing of a house without consulting what in the normal course of events would be his significant other.

The real victim of his behaviour is his daughter Pauline. We are told that he married too early...hello...judging from Pauline's age he married in his early 30s. This is the excuse proffered for being a neglectful father??? He effectively purchased Wheel House as a place to stow Pauline so she doesn't disrupt his London lifestyle. We are supposed to view Wanda as a wicked future stepmother as she wants to place Pauline in boarding school and live in London. What happens in the end? Pauline is dumped in boarding school while William and Florian will live principally in London. We all know that once the children arrive Pauline will be completely abandoned. A more cynical reader may construe that Florina outwitted, outplayed and outlasted Wanda. I haven't finished the book yet, but have read all these comments as well as so many other BN books with a similar situation. Yes, telling tales for the sake of revenge or personal gain is something to be condemned, but there are limits, especially when safety is involved. Even Enid Blyton, that bastion of traditional English morality and "the decent thing", had a character say, "There are times when you have to make a distinction between telling tales and reporting." And since she would have been about The Great Betty's age, the concept can't have been too novel.
So why did The Great Betty go along with the "no telling" rule? Had she not got the memo, or was it a case of needing to keep the drama up so the book wouldn't finish 40 pages too early?
Personally, I'm leaning towards the latter...
EvieAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-33264311941409165552023-11-21T03:26:38.168-08:002023-11-21T03:26:38.168-08:00Shall we be the Christmas Grinch? It really is a tragedy that someone at Mills and Boon did not have the foresight to employ an editor for the 1990s segment of the canon as this is yet another story that needed a judicial hand.

A story this short really didn't need a mugging AND the child rescue. One incident would have sufficed to reveal Clare to Oliver (or land her (Bertha) in hospital). It wasn't needed to reveal Bertha's character as her selflessness was already established at this point through Tiny Tot's Spicy Story Hour.

As for the clothes, amusing as the descriptions were, this was a little heavy handed. Yes, it was believable that for a formal social occasion Bertha would be at the mercy of Clare's fast fashion but for her everyday wear? Not likely as Stepmama was very aware that level of neglect would be noticed by her husband.
