He had chosen with his head not with his heart, and not very well at that. What can he have been thinking? Suitable??? What had he been looking for in a wife? What did he see in Estelle? Did he have any feelings for her at all? It does not seem that way.
Betty AnonymousBetty Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15517346001348814015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-10701857097175419162012-06-25T20:04:44.171-07:002012-06-25T20:04:44.171-07:00Happy anniversary Betty Debbie (and BettyMary in a...Happy anniversary Betty Debbie (and BettyMary in a few weeks)! The PRT and I are almost to 29, but we've been together 30.

Where's Betty JoDee when I need her? I love this book. It's in my top 20. I love the way Christian is bowled over from the get-go. He isn't expecting the immediate strength of his feelings for Eliza, and he doesn't know what to do. He, like many of our RDDs, argues with himself about the fact he is engaged to someone and yet is attracted to another woman. He's angry with himself for going against his principles and snipes at Eliza like that is going to rid him of the feelings. She realizes he's the one for her, and she snipes right back because that prune Estelle is in the triangle. Christian and Estelle are engaged, not married, and it seems pretty passionless to all concerned. What is the saying Betty always brings up? Many a slip between the cup and lip? I've seen many relationships and engagements that don't lead to marriage, for the best of all concerned, including myself. As for Eliza, more power to her! She knew in her bones he was the man for her. I don't think she did anything horrible to trap him. This is a Betty book, after all. After she went to Holland, she even started backing off after she realized Christian was so rich. Wasn't it Britannia that did this too? I can understand the self-doubt when faced with $$$ like that. Thank heavens the prune finds her own pruneman, and everyone involved lives happily ever after.

And I love the Scotland part. Rain. Bad weather. Asthma (lifetime asthmatic here). Cat and kittens. All of it. I like when she climbs the mountain. She did keep the lodge in sight. The strength of the storm just caught her unawares. Been there, done that. No, I haven't climbed a mountain/hill in Scotland, but I have done something stupid just to spite someone. The scene with the rat-faced man is one of my faves. I love a knight in shining armor showing up to save the damsel in distress.

Just my $.02. Really do like this book.

Betty AnoninTX (going outside to watch for the space station)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-79961130519914274482012-06-25T19:17:05.308-07:002012-06-25T19:17:05.308-07:00Happy anniversary, Betty Debbie. And to you, too,...Happy anniversary, Betty Debbie. And to you, too, Betty Mary.

Yes, I loved the comedy in the beginning as well. But I liked that Eliza blew away the stereotypes. Isn't it ironic that Christian judged a name, and Eliza judged a picture? But unlike him, she was more apologetic. And Estelle was a bore. I think deep down inside, Christian knew that she was right, which irked him because it showed (1.) he had shown bad judgment in his choice of a fiancee and (2.) he couldn't get out of it because of honor and duty.Betty Luluhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17634519999898307583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-39765940256846858202012-06-25T15:35:18.945-07:002012-06-25T15:35:18.945-07:00Chiming in on Betty Ariel's Laptop from the he...Chiming in on Betty Ariel's Laptop from the heart of Shenandoah!
I wish I could down load pics here, or send someone a photo text. Alas, you'll have to wait til the weekend to see some Wild Betty's.
I was shocked to find I don't have this book. I've been searching everywhere for a copy. I got the first chapter free on my kindle and discovered that I've never read this one! Oh dear, should I buy the kindle version or keep looking for a hard copy to enjoy Betty Jo Dee's favorite for the first time?
Happy Anniversary Betty Debbie & Prof. Steve. Prof VdeP and I will be chalking up the big 33 exactly 3 weeks from today. Crazy, huh? I don't feel old enough, but the eldest pledge is 32, so I am. But still kicking up my heels and having fun in Virginia, the state that tells everyone it's for Lovers. I can handle that!BettyMaryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12676458096380002508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-61591925007381198982012-06-25T11:32:49.878-07:002012-06-25T11:32:49.878-07:00Considering the fact that you did not like Heaven ...Considering the fact that you did not like Heaven Is Gentle all that much, it is quite a good review. Dare I say it? I did suspect it of being written by a guest (if not ghost) writer because of Doctor McTHAT'SAVERYRUDENAME’s monniker. The Great Betty would not have approved!!!
I always found it strange that the physicians running an experimental asthma clinic didn’t hire anybody to keep the patients accommodations clean. "Men!", yes – but doctors? Then again, I don’t know how far they had got asthma-research-wise in 1975. – What am I saying? Dirt is dirt.
Except, that I’ve seen a documentary this year where they explained that if mom-to-be walks through the stables (old-fashioned kind with hay loft) every day and breathes in all those particles and whatnot that float around in the air chances are that baby will not develop asthma. Interesting.
Sheep skin jackets were the fashion in the late 70s. One boy and one girl in my class had one. Each. Gunsmoke's Marshal Matt Dillon had one too.
Betty AnonymousBetty Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15517346001348814015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-73344405069623888542012-06-25T09:34:28.600-07:002012-06-25T09:34:28.600-07:00Betty Barbara here--
First off--Happy Anniversary!...Betty Barbara here--
First off--Happy Anniversary! to Betty Debbie and her Dr van der Stevejinck. 32 years--not too shabby!

Second, I liked the beginning a bit better than you did. (except for her ignoring the weather escapade--shades of ditzy-ness there, Eliza). And had the site not been in use long enough for someone to notice that her little cottage was downhill and situated to flood in a heavy rain??

Third--we now need Betty JoDee to chime in on why it's her favorite book.

And lastly, for Bettys who missed the original discussion--Estelle's 'salt cellars' are located above her collar bones, and not on her chest. ('Salt cellars' being a term to indicate hollows above/behind one's collar bones--usual cause? being thin to the point of boniness!)Barb in Marylandhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11374278685536530837noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-931981138747432610.post-53952200782255092352012-06-25T08:15:21.641-07:002012-06-25T08:15:21.641-07:00Betty Debbie,
