Results and The Hocked Locket Bracket (Round 4)

There was a heartbreaker in this latest round of voting for me. My beloved Gold Medalist, Rose Comely, fell to Florina and the Great Lemonade Deluge. (If I may steal from William Tecumseh Sherman: Lemonade is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want.) As much as I love Florina, Rose is almost my favorite and I am sad she is no more.

Lemonade is a metaphor for pay-back.

Here are the results for The Handful of A Levels Bracket!

"Your job, Mr. Mortensen is not to side with Henrietta or Sarah.
Only to comfort the losing partisans. Do you understand?"

"Should I undo another button on my sensible blue shirt?"

"I knew we called the right man."

My Neelsian Senses suspect that The Hocked Locket Bracket is going to cause some heartburn. Vote, take some Tums and tell me your troubles!

  2. Betty Keira, I can't believe that you didn't gratify the Betty hordes with an oil-stained shorts photo since we are celebrating the win by Tabitha (even though I didn't vote for her)!

My votes for this round are:

    Henrietta's Own Castle
    Only By Chance
    A Dream Came True

  4. Betty Barbara here--wondering just what is wrong with some of her fellow Betties. How could they fail to see the superior excellence of 'Mistletoe Kiss'? I need to console myself with an adult beverage.

    As for this round--

    Henrietta's Own Castle
    Matilda's Wedding
    Dearest Mary Jane

The first two were easy for me. After great soul-searching I had to go with Mary Jane over the dashing helicopter rescue in Dream.

    1. you know I almost went in and changed my vote to Mistletoe Kiss at the last minute (after re-reading both of them over the weekend) but I didn't, taking pity on poor Keira who has to figure all this out. I do love it.

    Only By Chance
    Dearest Mary Jane

The first one was tough for me; both are in my top 10, but in the end, the bits with Mrs. Brown and the cabbage rose-patterned wallpaper pushes FiR over Henrietta. The other two were easier choices.

The only heroine owning a house in the Netherlands vs. Mrs Brown’s cabbage roses. Tough one, because I hadn’t read Henrietta’s Own Castle in a long time. — Well, meanwhile, I have refreshed my memory. Instinct was right, as it so often is. I do prefer chopping wood at the cottage at Wester Ross.

Matilda’s Wedding vs. Only By Chance — or, Flu vs. Flu — Argh!
What can I say, the flu won. 😃 And the kitten rescue. And the lovely hero. And this Henrietta.

The last one is easy. As much as I like Mary Jane — hey, wait! I do hate her being so mean to Fabian! — she doesn’t stand a chance against Aunt Jemima’s 🥞 pancake mix and maple syrup — er, I mean Jemima’s 🍞 bread and porridge. Thank heaven for the Aga! 😊

  8. Guess what I had for lunch, today!

A cheater version of spekpannenkoeken with stroop.
🥞 with Canadian maple syrup and 🥓

I did some grocery shopping at the shop near my parents, yesterday, and, lo and behold, they had American pancakes on special, made in – wait for it – the Netherlands, in the province South Holland, in a place named Sliedrecht, which lies right next to/east of Dordrecht.

    Lekker!

P.S.: As I am writing this, I see a Betty on the globe widget from Hasselt, Overijssel, the Netherlands. 😊

    1. so how was it? It always sounds so delicious. I tried reproducing it one time just with ingredients on hand and either I didn't do it right or it's not as good as it sounds, nobody at my house was very impressed.

    2. It was totally delicious - lekker. But then I also love the real thing. Had it once at a restaurant in Amsterdam, a long time ago.

    2. 📝 Taking note: The ettys arbara in ℳ&ℳ, respectively, are showing their excellent taste by not voting for my choices. Pshaw!

"Now, now, Betty Anonymous. Nobody says pshaw anymore. Besides, you do remember your choices were totally annihilated in the last round? Huh?" 😊

  10. My choices are:
    Fate is Remarkable
    Matilda's Wedding
    Dearest Mary Jane

The first one was an easy choice for me. Matilda's Wedding is one of the few books in the canon with a long ending, a proper courtship and wedding. I love A Dream Came True, but it lost because we don't get to see much of the hero's perspective, do we?
