Betty in the Real World: Her Family Tree
Based on researches by Betties Barbara, Mary and Ross, I have concocted the following attempt at a family tree. I think it would be so interesting to find a proper biography of Betty, or at least hear from someone who actually knew her. Mary Burchell wrote her autobiography, which I bet is fascinating and intend requesting via the rotten interlibrary loan at my new library, or maybe the faboo ILL at my old library. Hmm. Sorry! Digression! Why oh why did our Betty not write an autobiography? Sure, she was writing 200,000 words/year of doctor-nurse romance, but surely she could have squeezed in 80,000 words or so of life story.

My goodness, The Great Betty had a lot of aunts/uncles, great- or otherwise.
ReplyDeleteBetty Barbara had added some information regarding Betty's older sister, Lilian Isobel. (I had copied & pasted the link and info into one of my documents and found it there. The good ol' copy & paste method.)

I don't know if this is really "our Charlotte". I did not find a Caroline Meijer born around that time, there was a Carolyn C M Meyer born in Windsor, Berkshire, 1943. They did spell Meijer "Meyer" in the entries for Betty's marriage to Johannes.

ReplyDeleteI've been having a fun time doing "Betty" genealogy as well! Charlotte P.I. Meijer is indeed Betty Neel's daughter. I found the record which lists the mother's maiden name as Neels. Charlotte would be 69 this year. Found her marriage record in 1978 also, but nothing further. I love research!!! :-)

ReplyDeleteI picked up Only by Chance and happened to read the short paragraph about Betty Neels.
Betty Neels had/has a grandson.
Came across this just recently -- Harlequin used to publish a magazine in the 1970s. In some of the early issues, there was an "Author's Own Story" column. Betty Neels wrote hers in 1973. A great article with a photo and with lots of little tidbits -- life in Holland and in England, and some of her nursing experience during the war.

ReplyDeleteMy mother in law has a lot of Betty Neels books. She passed away April 1st. I inherited her book collection. It will probably take me two years to read all of her books. They are very good. Thank you Betty and Shirley.
ReplyDeleteI have been an avid reader if Betty Neels since the early 70s. Her beautiful stories never disappoint and I have collected most of her novels. My late husband also used to read and enjoy them. It would have been lovely to know where she is finally resting so that I could visit if returning to the UK to thank her.
