The Great Mary Stewart

We love Mary Stewart. I can say, very definitively, that her Touch Not the Cat  (found among the Reader's Digest editions in my parents' library when I was in 6th or 7th grade and passionately recommended to all of my friends that year) began my fascination with Mary Stewart, Gothic mysteries and romance all in one fell swoop.

I found this wonderful interview with her on YouTube and thought you might enjoy. If you haven't encountered her before, she is a writer contemporary to The Great Betty though her books are more 'romantic suspense'. There are very few I haven't read and very few that I do not love whole-heartedly. (The Ivy Tree, I'm looking at you.)

When she describes living in a small town and having nothing else to do but read voraciously, I get a pang for what having cable has done to us. (kidding/not kidding)

  1. Oh, I LOVE Mary Stewart. Even better than Betty. (sorry for the heresy) I'm so glad you posted this. Even though I was imagining Mary looking like one of her many heroines. I too read The Gabriel Hounds in a RDC book. It was LOVE. I checked them all out from the library and still have most of the books. My fave is The Ivy Tree, although I think I'd have gone for naughty Conner. What a hunky guy!

As for the rest of your blog - truly, I love it. Your humor slays me. After reading a couple of your reviews last night I attempted to go back to the Betty I was reading. Lo and behold, the words were in your voice - or the one I imagine you'd have, sarcasm, black humor, and pithy observations. I can't wait to read more Bettys and then go back and read your reviews. Life is good. ;-)

    1. I forgot to mention...Wildfire at Midnight...The Crystal Cave...Madam, Will You Talk. Speaking of Mary Stewart, have you ever read Helen McInnes? She has some great novels too.

    2. I don't think I've ever read McInnes. I'll give her a go. Bless you for loving The Ivy Tree. I could not do it and I am not sure why... The Gabriel Hounds was fantastic. Loved it.

  2. Betty Marita here. Oh, Mary Stewart. Who did not want to visit Greece after reading My Brother Michael or The Moonspinners?
