Results and The Handful of A Levels (Round Three)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I loathe tie-breaking and this week I had none to perform. Our closest contest was between The Girl With Green Eyes and The Vicar's Daughter but the latter squeaked by with one vote. Here are the results (already formatted for Round Four--though I am thinking that we will be doing a Wildcard Round after this one and so I expect that An Ordinary Girl will have a contest when we get to it). I am enormously sorry if voting is frustrating and complicated for anyone. It turns out that communicating all of this is like plunging into a canal to save a rescue dog.

Uncomfortable but, ultimately, worth it
Sister Peters in Amsterdam vs.
Dearest Love

The Vicar's Daughter vs.
Caroline's Waterloo

An Ordinary Girl (bye)

There was a surprisingly passionate group who supported Neels-Black-Sheep A Girl to Love and, as expected, Blow Hot, Blow Cold did not survive Sister Peters in Amsterdam.

I'll allow it. (SNIFF)

Now, let's get voting on The Handful of A Levels Bracket! May justice be swift and decisive.

    A Girl Named Rose
    The Magic of Living

Though I don't know why I even bother voting when Blow Hot, Blow Cold has already been eliminated and even if it is a Wild Card, well you people apparently will just put something else ahead of it, even though Sister P. doesn't even make my (constantly changing although actually never codified in any formal way) top five. Harumph.

  2. Chain of Destiny
    The Mistletoe Kiss
    Fifth Day of Christmas
    The Magic of Living

I know I'm going to be the odd one out, but yes, I admit it: I do like The Fifth Day of Christmas more than A Girl Named Rose. I have tried to like Rose. I really have. But I just can't. The book itself is fine, but Rose is just not my cup of tea.

    I'll show myself out.

    Tulips for Augusta
    A Girl Named Rose
    The Magic of Living

    A Gentle Awakening (bye)

    Well, that was painless.
Unlike looking at the results. LOL. 😺

I agonized over WWtC v. TCoD. I would SO hate for Justin and Emma to get voted out, but I adore Suzannah and Horace (and Guy, to a lesser extent - Lol!). Hopefully, the loser will go to the Wild Card round.

TfA v. TMK was much the same. I do love Roly and Constanijn, but a girl who has been blessed(?) with the name Ermentrude needs some love.

AGNR and TFDoC both get 5 stars from me, so that was essentially a coin toss.

The Magic of Living was my first Betty, so no contest there.

  5. Betty Barbara here, heaving a sigh of relief that this is an (almost) easy bracket for her.

    Wish with the Candles
    The Mistletoe Kiss
    The Fifth Day of Christmas
    The Magic of Living

    A Gentle Awakening(bye)

Though I did dither a bit over The Magic of Living vs Stormy Springtime...

So, I finally voted for Rose Comely. It took three rounds...
The most difficult choice was between the Mistletoe Kiss and Tulips for Augusta. I adore the way Ermentrude and Ruerd have a sixth sense about each other's presence. But darling Roly is just so darling...

  8. Betty Myrna here, have loved La Neels since I was a teenager:

    The Chain of Destiny
    The Mistletoe Kiss
    A Girl Named Rose
    The Magic of Living

  9. I'm surprised (and delighted!) to see all the love for Ermentrude and Ruerd. I know it's a late-Canon offering and those don't usually stand up against the early books, but to me it's nearly perfect.

    Magic of Living

Wish vs. Chain was hard. REALLY hard. Also Mistletoe Kiss vs. Tulips. In fact, all four of these matchups had their difficulties. Sadly, I would have picked Mistletoe Kiss over either Fifth Day of Christmas or Girl Named Rose, but alas, the bracket challenge wreaks its havoc. (fwiw, that's not meant as a criticism of the system, doing it this way is fun and has kept me entertained and reading TGB for weeks. Just sighing over having to vote "against" Ermentrude and Ruerd, because in spite of its problems, I do love TfA).

    1. In fact, that first pair was so hard that i'm changing my mind. I don't see an edit button, please change my first vote to Wish with the Candles, thanks. :-)
