Results and The Barfing on His Brogues Bracket (Round 2)

The Imperiled Poppets Bracket results are in! As ever, I have already formatted the new bracket going forward but these are all the winners from the last round of voting. Stand-outs include Cassandra By Chance, Tabitha in Moonlight, Uncertain Summer and (one of my favorites) The Promise of Happiness.

Also known as
"Becky and the Baron, the Hot, Hot Baron"

The Secret Pool
The Little Dragon vs.
The End of the Rainbow
The Hasty Marriage vs.
Stars Through the Mist
Discovering Daisy vs.
The Convenient Wife
Tabitha in Moonlight vs.
Uncertain Summer
Polly vs.
Cassandra By Chance
The Promise of Happiness vs.
Once For All Time
An Ideal Wife vs.
Damsel in Green
Roses Have Thorns vs.
bye--no match this week

There was one very painful tie I had to break and for this I consulted with my fellow Founding Betty, Betty Debbie. We chose The Secret Pool over Waiting for Deborah even though there is so much to love about the latter (the way the carpets change in the part of the house the old lady is kept, the old man who keeps caramels in his pockets and calls the heroine as wholesome as a loaf of bread...). The Secret Pool is quite focused and has an emotional heft that is hard to forget.

Now on to Round Two of The Barfing on His Brogues Bracket! Fewer books to weigh against each other but there is hardly any refuge from heartbreak going forward. I am trying to change out the books that get a bye each round, fyi. So one that got a pass last time I tried to cycle into another match-up even if the numbers were odd.

Here is our Book Reviews Archive for any plot refreshers. Again, I am loving you all for keeping your votes so easy to read.
Love and lardy cakes,
Betty Keira

    Making Sure of Sarah

    Caroline's Waterloo
    A Girl to Love

Why couldn't A Girl to Love be up against Caroline's Waterloo? I am a big fan of Oom Valentijn and Hannah. But Caroline hiding behind the door...

All the rest were pretty easy choices this week, although I am afraid that my dear Lally will be losing out to the plunger-loving hordes.

  2. The Imperiled Poppets Bracket was the most successful for me, so far. Only three of my choices didn't make it into the next round — Midsummer Star, Hilltop Tryst and Never the Time and the Place. I don't mind about the first two, but Never the Time and the Place? I'll just say one word - Stourhead! Sniff.

    1. Sister Peters in Amsterdam – yes, yes, yes!

    2. Blow Hot, Blow Cold – Visiting Consultant, of course!

    3. Sorry, Vienna. Despite all your lovely sightseeing tours and creamy cakes ☕, you didn’t make it. And I cannot even explain why not. Britannia is just a little ahead of you in the excitement department.

    4. Dearest vs. Dearest was a bit of a struggle. The Plunger won.

    5. I love the beginning of When May Follows, but since I couldn’t vote for Lucy Lockitt in the first round (it had to be Judith) I am very happy to do so now!

    6. The Vicar’s Daughter made sure Sarah didn’t make it.

    7. Dumping sausages and steak into the Veronica’s lap takes the trump over visiting Heidelberg any time.

    8. Easy! Caroline’s Waterloo – One of my top top top favourites!

    9. A Girl to Love – Yes! You deserve it!

  4. Betty Barbara is glad to vote for:

    Sister Peters
    An Old-fashioned Girl
    Magic in Vienna
    Dearest Love
The Girl with the Green Eyes
    The Vicar's Daughter
    An Ordinary Girl
    Caroline's Waterloo
    A Girl to Love

Ah, this one was easy. No coin-flipping required.

  5. Fateful Bargain
    An Old Fashioned Girl
    Magic in Vienna
    Dearest Love
    Girl with Green Eyes
    Vicar's Daughter
    An Ordinary Girl
    Caroline's Waterloo
    A Girl to Love

I seem to be veering off a little differently on some of these. I like the Fateful Bargain, not sure why but I like the situation of them trading jobs, so to speak. I like the heroine of An Old-Fashioned Girl and her subtle yet decisive maneuvering of the doctor, who doesn't know what hit him, poor soul. The Vicar's Daughter is a sentimental favorite of mine merely because it is the first Betty I read. Not a true favorite, but it got me reading her so it wins.

Some of these were slam dunks to me. Dearest Love is one of my top five, as is Caroline's Waterloo. I love it when the handsome, successful, and incredibly confident RDDs/RBDs are taken down by the "insignificant" plain gal.

    Dearest Love
The Girl with the Green Eyes
    The Vicar's Daughter
    Heidelberg Wedding
    Caroline's Waterloo
    A Girl to Love

    1. Easy choice
    2. I do so love Patience who definitely lives up to her name, but sadly she's up against Max and Sophy, and Julius simply isn't pulling his weight.
    3. I love the Vienna travelogue, the bookworm RDD, and the irrepressible Cordelia.
    4. Arabella and the Plunger o'Love!
    5. I don't feel strongly either way on this one, but since I am a girl with green eyes...
    6. While malodorous Sarah is quite charming, TVD has a great meet-cute and an equally touching denouement.
    7. This one is actually memorable to me because of the OM. Humphrey is such a great-awful character.
    8. Like Betty Melody, I love the very hot Oom Valentijn and Hannah, but Caro and Radinck are one of the classic couples of the Canon.

  8. Fateful Bargain

    Vicar's Daughter
    Heidelberg Wedding
    Hannah
    Girl to Love

Several of these were practically toss-ups for me, but none of them are ones that I care deeply about so I almost didn't vote. I'm probably the only Betty fan that doesn't like Caroline's Waterloo, so I will be the sole vote for Hannah. I'm loving this tournament-- I thought I'd read them all, but I never really went through and checked, so I've read at least half a dozen in the last three weeks that were new to me. Even found a new top fave! I'll be offline for the next couple of weeks, happy voting Betty fans! Hope I'll be back for the next round.

What happened to the final pair--which would have been Hannah vs the Final Touch?? Could they have been left off the Round Two Ballot in error???
Inquiring Betty Barbara wants to know!
