Round Two!

The real weakness for Round One was that Novellas de Betty had to go head to head with those of the same era.  Probably they were written within the same year.  Thankfully, Round Two is a fish of a different flavor.  Our first match-up for Round Two comprises the early canon vs. the middle canon and I'm not going to lie, there are at least two pairings that are going to cause me emotional indigestion:
Sadie Laura Comely-ffinch considered long and hard.  He was gorgeous.  He had been the only one in Holland to ask her out.  He'd also "run out of gas" on a back road and pawed her.  She finished considering and smacked him hard.

Sister Peters in Amsterdam vs. Never Say Goodbye
Blow Hot, Blow Cold vs. Once For All Time
Fate is Remarkable vs. Polly
Tulips for Augusta vs. At the End of the Day
Tabitha in Moonlight vs. Never the Time and the Place

She wanted to run past him as he stood there jangling the change in his pocket.  But he caught her instead and proffered a large, snowy-white square of linen and let her burst into tears all over his wool superfine.

Greetings from Asheville, North Carolina. If there are any Bettys in the vicinity, I'm staying in the Willow Winds cabins, just off Route 25A. Of course, it's pouring rain night now, but who cares. It's cosy, and there's WiFi (I admit it: we *never* travel off the grid), and apart from the abysmal cold Betty Ross brought back from Oxford (which has made me twice as sick as it made him, the rotter), I'm having a fine time.

    1. Ooooh Asheville, I would love to see Biltmore, I would especially love to see it at Christmas when they decorate it so beautifully, sigh......

I beat you both Betty Barbara but I am not the kind of person who would rub it in, much... :-P ha ha!

    2. Yesterday, as I was surfing, I saw Asheville on the Conquering the World widget (between 2:00-2:30 p.m.), and I thought, "Could this be our Magdalen?"
      Enjoy your vacation!

  6. Sister Peters in Amsterdam ♥ ♥ ♥ Dear Addy. Love the scene when she gets lost in the flurry and steps into the hotel lobby. (Why is he annoyed?)
Once for All Time To go where no Oliviaminta has gone before. Behind the Iron Curtain. (No, ladies, not Brighton. There were heroines who did go to Brighton with the good-for-nothing skirt-chaser of the piece: Charity with Cor van Kamp (The Final Touch), Loveday with RBD’s-Evil-Cousin Charles (The Doctor’s Girl). Any more?)
Polly though I have always loved FIR
At the End of the Day Pitting these two against each other – not fair. I ♥ Roly too. Sniff.
Never the Time and the Place Stourhead. To you, of course, Josephine. Melt.

    1. Yes, I did get Once for All Time and Never Say Goodbye mixed up. My thoughts must have gone begging.
Anyway, it's still Dr half-Dutch Thackeray over the Jonkheer.
So all is well on the tallying side.

  7. WHAT are you people THINKING??!! Once for All Time "I love you but I choose not to mention it and watch you engage yourself to an idiot for THREE YEARS and hope things work out" over Blow Hot Blow Cold and the magnificent Max and super Sophy?

Betty Anon, your vote suggests you've mixed OfAT with Never Say Goodbye. Unless I've mixed them.

    Anyway, my votes:

Sister P, for starting it all, and having several of the core elements of Betty greatness? Or Never Say, for breaking the mold set a decade before? Hmmm.

    Never Say Goodbye
    ****BLOW HOT, BLOW COLD****
    Fate is Remarkable
abstain, as both Tulips and End of have deeply annoying mistaken-fiancee plots

    1. Oops, yes, I did get it mixed up. Now why did I do that? I know I was thinking "I always get it mixed up with Saturday's Girl I mustn't do that this time."
      Thanks.

    2. Betty Barbara here--
Well Betty van den Betsy--I like the first 3/4ths of Blow Hot, Blow Cold, but GAAKK--the big misunderstanding towards the end! I do believe that this is sordid and unworthy of the Great Betty and it just totally ruins my enjoyment of the book.
[Brief recap--Max acts as a screen so that Tineke and her old boyfriend could snog while waiting for his crazy wife to die. Oh they may say they are just talking--nudge, nudge, wink wink... And then we are supposed to be thrilled that he is now free. Ick. And Max went along with this. Sheesh].
Plus Sophy acted like a high school girl--making up a boyfriend, dodging Max,etc. She may have been a fantastic nurse, but she did get on my one nerve.
So there you have it--why this Betty voted for Once For All Time

    3. Yes, that part is ghastly -- but if you pretend it just didn't happen, perfect book!

Polly (barely squeaks by, but I do love her Latin scholar-li-ness and Laura Ashley clothes)
Tulip for Augusta (or Roly and the Ripped Slacks)
Tabitha in Moonlight (for bikini AND oil stained shorts)
