A Summer Wedding. Part II

...and spoiler alert!  Careful reading of the last caption will reveal some exciting news!!
With the construction winding down, it was time to tart up the flower beds...with bark.  I've always just called it 'bark', but I have a friend who calls it 'beauty bark'.  I normally don't use it much, but for the sake of good looking flower beds (and disguising a few areas of dirt that haven't been seeded with grass yet - due to construction), we piled it on.  Unfortunately Dr. van der Stevejinck had overestimated how much we needed, but we were able to gift it to our neighbors, so all was well.

On Friday morning (wedding day, minus one), a few of us early risers drove up Mountain Loop Highway and took a short (2 miles total) hike up to the ice caves. It was a beautiful morning and a great way to take our minds off of wedding planning for a bit. (L to R: Bettys Tia, Keira, Sherri, Marcy, Stephanie, and down in front, Betty Keira's daughter, Laura)

If you read A Summer Wedding...Part I, you would have seen an arbor over by the deck. Same arbor, but the bride and groom wanted a different orientation.  Luckily it only took one power tool and a few men (of which we had an abundance), to temporarily move the arbor to the desired location. I left my son-in-law and brother in charge of tarting up the arbor, with Betty Keira (shown ironing) as creative consultant. Dr. van der Stevejinck seems a little at a loss as to what to do.

The weather was lovely - sunny and warm - but a wee bit bright (at least to my Pacific Northwest accustomed eyes).  Betty Keira had to move her ironing station occasionally to stay in the shade.  The sun wasn't being kind to her in her delicate condition.  Did you see what I just did? Yes, Betty Keira is in an 'interesting condition'.

  1. I'm truly enjoying these posts. Thank you for sharing.

    And congratulations to Betty Keira.

Does beauty bark work if you sleep in a bed of it?

  2. Oh my gosh! Congratulations, Betty Keira - how exciting! Best wishes!

And Betty Debbie, thank you for sharing your wedding prep stories. It looks like everything came out beautifully, and it gives me hope to see how well your yard has turned out!

    1. There's something ominous in that, " it gives me hope to see how well your yard has turned out," Betty Beth. Are you doing yard reconstruction in advance of your wedding, too?

  3. Whoo, guess we know who's been conjugating verbs lately. Congratulations to the happy family!

  4. Thanks, dear Bettys for warm congratulations. Since no one I know reads the blog (except for Betty Debbie) so it's safe to say that you all know ahead of anyone on my in-law side of the family and most of my close friends. But that's what you all have become so it seems fitting...I love the book Mrs. Miniver and came across this article about it that encapsulates just about everything true and real about parenthood:

"So much of the fun of parenthood lies "in watching the children re-make, with delighted wonder, one's own discoveries". On Christmas morning, when they burst in shortly after six to open their stockings: how odd, she reflects, that the tangerine in the toe of the stocking lingers even though children get a good supply of fruit all the year round.
This is one of the moments -- when the stockings are being opened, and the dawn is breaking, and she can hear the distant tinkle of teacups -- which Mrs. Miniver feels

paid off at a single stroke the debit side of parenthood: the morning sickness and the quite astonishing pain; the pram in the passage, the cold mulish glint in the cook's eye; the holiday nurse who had been in the best families; the pungent white mice, the shrivelled caterpillars; the plasticine on the door-handles . . . the alarms and emergencies, the swallowed button, the inexplicable earache, the ominous rash appearing on the eve of a journey; the school bills and the dentist's bills; the shortened step, the tempered pace, the emotional compromises, the divided loyalties, the adventures continually forsworn..."

    1. "the recalcitrant potty training toddlers..."

Best wishes for minimal morning sickness and an astonishing lack of pain.

And Betty Debbie, the yard looks gorgeous. I'm excited for Part III, in which I hope to learn what Betty Keira's well-ironed curtains? tablecloths? become.

  6. Congratulations, Betty Keira! How wonderful! If the baby is a boy, may I suggest the name Hugo Ivo?! For a girl, how about Araminta Tishy?!

Enjoying the wedding photos, Betty Debbie!

  7. How Lovely, brilliant, grand, super, and fantastic. You all look so good and happy together. The family that pounds nails and hikes together... Weddings and Babies, nothing makes me smile more.

Oh WOW! Do I love babies. My niece had a darling girl last week. Giana Maureen being held by BettyMegan (can you believe she's only 16!). And Betty Brigid will be giving us G-baby #5, but my first grandchild from a daughter (you know, the ones you have all your life!) Except this one is in Ireland, where I'm going in October for the baptism.

    1. Oh my goodness, Giana Maureen is adorable! Love all the dark hair.

The Hanna Bettys seem to run mostly to boys...my daughter-in-law Rebekah is having a boy around Christmas (grandchild #5 for me also).

    2. True about the boys. We'd be a brilliant gene pool on which to found a male-oriented dynasty. Plenty of heirs and spares to go around.

This will be number five for me. As Betty Neels might say (never), enough for a vulgar American basketball team!

    3. My mom and I and my oldest son have kept it even. 5/5, 3/3, 2/2.
But my darling little granddaughter wants to drive a garbage truck when she grows up, so gender holds no gaurantees!
But of my mom's 37 g-kids it's about 2 boys for every girl (25 boys and 12 girls.) There are 39 great g-kids numbering 23 boys and 16 girls. Not counting my g-baby shamrock, who's parents like surprises.
These 50 are about 1/3 of the possible family , at our 1st annual cottage reunion this month. Of my immed. fam only 3 of us came. More have signed up for next year, including my son and dil with the 4 kidlets! Yea!

Can's wait to see the group shot of the founding Betty family!

    4. My mom says I wanted to be a garbageman when I was little because I liked the truck! I don't remember this.

  9. Exciting indeed! Congratulations, Betty Keira and Betty Mary! What a perfectly precious little poppet. Betty A., not to be outdone, is a newly-minted great aunt. (It's a girl too.) There seems to be something in the air...
