Although really, if you love the animals and have no money and no relatives except the evil kind, and apparently no friends, what else can you do? I'd try asking the vicar whether there's anyone in the village who would take them for a spell while I got myself settled -- but I suppose Betty would say that if they're left locally, the evil stepfather would find them and kill them just to be evil.
Ooo, just read something you don't usually see in a betty. Oliver in a T-shirt and old comfortable pants feeding himself bread and butter. I don't know why but this is sexier that when he's dressed to the nines!
