Round One: Section Thirteen Results and Section Fourteen (the final section!!!!!!!!!!) Voting

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we have two ties this week and as the self-designated tie-breaker, I have to cast the fatal votes.  No boo-ing, no hissing, no walking off in a huff. ;0)
Aaron Burr, third Vice President of the United States, was a tie-breaker for the US Senate and  a packer of heat. These two circumstances were probably coincidental.

In the first match-up, I'll give it to Nanny By Chance over An Ideal Wife.  They were both given a Queen of Puddings rating (one from each of The Founding Bettys) and it really is six of one, half a dozen of the other.  The...oh I hesitate to say loser...might be the perfect candidate for the wildcard round.

Discovering Daisy crushed A Winter Love Story

A Good Wife wiped the floor with An Innocent Bride
and
I'm picking Making Sure of Sarah over A Christmas Romance because we get so much of the hero's point of view.  I just love that she's stinking vile-ly and he's a lost man.  Again, if I've called this the wrong way, you may take it up with Ninja Assassins...or a wild card nomination.  Whatevs.
But whatever tie-breaking mischief happened, Betty Keira knew that Terrance Howard would always be there with some hustle and flow and a newly-pressed lawn handkerchief.

Now on to our last section of round one voting!!!!

Always and Forever vs. Matilda's Wedding
Dearest Eulalia vs. An Independent Woman
and, since we have an odd number of Betty books, pick any one of these three:
The Doctor's Girl vs. An Ordinary Girl vs. Emma's Wedding

Of course, Josh Lucas looks like the conscientious hanky-carrying type too...

  1. Hah! I beat Betty Barbara again! Now, do I care about any of these books? Not really. Throwing a dart, then:

    Dearest Eulalia
    The Doctor's Girl

totally off the subject - I saw a British cookbook on Amazon that I MUST have, "Bedfordshire Clangers and Lardy Cakes". I don't know how I have lived without it for so long, or why Betty never included clangers in any of her books. They seem to be a long "Hot Pocket" with meat and potatoes in one end and fruit filling at the other. You start eating at the meat end and work your way towards dessert. Unless you're a "Life is short eat dessert first" kind of person...lol

    1. I remember those pocket-things from a regency(?) novel, and the hero or heroine asked, How do you know at which end to start eating?

    2. You probably already know this by now, but they score the dough on the dessert end before baking. They used to be steamed or boiled but I don't see how the dough would cook, baking sounds better. There is a little "dough dam" in the middle to keep the different fillings apart.

  4. Betty Barbara here--
Hey! I went out this afternoon to get a haircut!

    Oh my, the final books----
Matilda's Wedding, I really like this one.
Independent Woman The failed shop made me cry! The vanishing cat had me puzzled--both served to overtake Eulalia.
Emma's Wedding never fails to please.

    1. Top twenty favorite books? Sounds like a guest post to me...

    2. Shoot. I'm no writer! I do think it would be a fun thing someday for people to list their top ten Betty books. :)

Hubs and I took a quick trip to the Tuscon area to go to Saguaro National Park. At night I sat around and thought about my fave Betty books and scribbled lists. Still adding and moving around a few titles. I had made the remark one time about wondering just how many books I had in my top ten, so I just decided to see!

  7. Betty AinTX -are you going to tell us what they are? Is Cassandra Darling #1 ?

    1. No, it's not Cassandra by Chance, although Cassandra Darling is in the top ten. The first two spots are, without a doubt, Fate Is Remarkable and Once for All Time. I can't pick one over the other, so they are tied for #1. Love them both so much and have read them both more times than I can remember.

As as aside, hoping Betty fans will appreciate this, my precious teeny tiny almost 89-year-old mother is reading Betty books. She is homebound with many health problems, but bless her, she has fairly good eyesight after cataract surgery. So she reads every day. She doesn't want an e reader. She wants real books. She had been reading some series about quilt mysteries that has ended. For Christmas I bought her a large print Fate Is Remarkable, not being sure she would like it or not. She did! So I've been looking on eBay, Amazon, etc., for large print Bettys. That's one reason I think I've been figuring out my favorites because I've been trying to get them for Mom. She's finished 7 now, and I just took her a sack of 9 more. So cute.

    2. To add a little bit more cuteness, she was worried about my spending all that money on books for her. I assured her that I myself would need the large print books eventually as I am very nearsighted. So since we are sharing the books, so to speak, that made it ok for me to buy them.

    3. That is the cutest story ever.

    4. I've been shopping tonight for some books for Mom. Get this: $2,554.45. That is what a seller wants for a used large print copy of Not Once but Twice on Amazon. I love that book and my mom, but I can't afford to pay two mortgage payments for a book! ha Sometimes I wonder where sellers come up with the prices like that. Many times the prices are $100ish, $200ish, which I can't pay either. I did manage to find six more for her at decent prices.

  8. Matilda’s Wedding The last volume to make my collection complete (in English) was Always and Forever. I would have liked to pick it for that reason, but I won’t, because I liked Matilda better.
An Independent Woman I adore it. Famous line, 'I can't say I agree with Oscar about your dress, but then I know it's a curtain, don't I? ' – I felt like kicking him for that.
An Ordinary Girl tops the other two, easily.

  9. Matilda's Wedding please.

Betty AnoninTX, what a cute story. My 87-year-old mother-in-law was the person who introduced me to Betty Neels. I wouldn't say that she is as obsessive a fan as I am, but she does enjoy them if they happen to come her way.

Oi. "Lally?" Meh "But the, I know it's a curtain, don't I?" Boo! So, Dearest Eulalia

I hope these make the precinct in time:

    Matilda's Wedding
An Independent Woman-I love this book only until the wool/embroidery shop opens. Since I'm squashing any desire to own a wool shop so the responsibilities do not interfere with my knitting, I do so want her to be a success with this store. She fails with store ownership for more reasons than being in love and I wish Julia instead had a very busy store that she sells off to a couple of chatty customers in order to waltz into the sunset with Gerard. In fact, I shall enjoy this scenario instead...

    1. Yay for you, Betty Adrianne! Re-writing the text to conform better with your own vision of happiness is the perfect response to sub-ideal scenes. Might make a good poll for the Founding Bettys to run... Which scene do you most wish you could re-write?

      Delete
    2. Betty Barbara here--
Yes, yes, a poll! Unfortunately, I have at least one scene per book, even in my all-time favorites, where I like to take the mental re-write pen and 'do it better'!!
Betty Adrienne--love your ending for Independent Woman!

  12. And what's wrong with a dress made out of a curtain? If it's good enough for Scarlett O'Hara...as long as you remember to take out the curtain rod.....(Carol Burnett-you rule!)

    1. Oh my, that Carol Burnett scene was hysterical!

I can say that I have worn clothing made from chicken feed sacks when I was a kid. My paternal grandmother saved the fabric, and my mom sewed up the outfits!

    4. No one wanted poor Harvey to make it through any scene-they wanted to see Tim Conway make him laugh so hard he could not say his lines.

    5. Remember how Harvey and Tim would look at each other and be doing everything in the world not to laugh! All they had to do was just look at each other. No words necessary! I used to just die watching them. They were so funny! One of my all-time favorite tv shows.
