They Say When You Marry in June...

...you're a bride all your life.
And the bridegroom who marries in June
Gets a sweetheart for a wife.
Dr. van der Stevejinck and I were married in June - 30 years ago this month. I'm not sure he ended up with "a sweetheart for a wife" - but since he says so, I'll go with it. I had never been particularly keen on being a "June Bride" - but our wedding date was picked solely for convenience sake. We were both college students at the time, and the date we picked was just after Spring Quarter ended, and before Summer Quarter started. We had a 5 day window of opportunity.
My question is, when did you get married, and what was the deciding factor?

And just for fun here's a poem about wedding months(warning - some months don't fare too well):
'Married in January's hoar and rime,
Widowed you'll be before your time.
Married in February's sleepy weather,
Life you'll tread in time together.
Married when March winds shrill and roar,
Your home will be on a distant shore.
Married beneath April's changing skies,
A chequered path before you lies.
Married when bees over May blossom flit,
Strangers around your board will sit.
Married in the month of roses-June,
Life will be one long honeymoon.
Married in July with flowers ablaze,
Bittersweet memories on after days.
Married in August's heat and drowse,
Lover and friend in your chosen spouse.
Married in September's golden glow,
Smooth and serene your life will go.
Married when leaves in October thin,
Toil and hardship for you gain.
Married in veils of November mist,
Fortune your wedding ring has kissed.
Married in days of December cheer,
Love's star shines brighter from year to year.'

  2. Ooops, hit that button too soon again....meant to add that the date was selected for the convenience of our families more than ourselves, but it all worked out......remember, I'm the "cheap wedding" girl and everything was just fine - went to Italy for the honeymoon!

  3. Just celebrated 12 years in May. We also got married between college semesters. I think my bridal shower was on a 'reading day'--a finals study day--so that everyone could come.

  4. Betty Barbara here--
We just celebrated our 38th(!!!). We got married on the Sat before the Memorial Day holiday, so we could have 10 workdays off for our honeymoon and only spend 9 days of annual leave. (We both worked for the US Gov't). Couldn't afford an exotic locale for the honeymoon--we drove to Hilton Head, SC.

  5. Gosh, I'm jealous. Dr. van der Stevejinck and I didn't get a honeymoon (too poor - waaaay too poor). We did get to sit in the back seat of my new in-laws car and drive 900 miles to my parents home for a wedding reception. 900 miles each way. It still makes me shudder to think of it.

  6. Dear Jimminy Cricket,
Would it be consistent with the values of Betty and my own cricket-y conscience to make any cracks about snogging, lay-bys and backseats?
    Sincerely,
    Betty Keira

    Love you Betty Debbie!

  7. Ah....snogging in the backseat. My poor in-laws. Great, I think I've officially entered the TMI zone.

  8. Dr Moose Steuve van der Haar had a looooong weekend for Columbus day and as the little Moose was due in April it was our first and best chance. He flew in on Friday, Married on Saturday, honeymooned on Sunday, Open house on Monday and back at School on Tuesday.

  9. Okay, I'm confused .... snogging in the back seat while brand-new parents-in-law are driving (or was Jolly driving?)? If it were Jolly then I can feel the long-time family retainer discretion from here, but parents-in-law .... *awkward pause--nothing's coming to me. Let's try again, if snogging involves anything more than holding hands then .... I still got nothing.

  10. We decided to get married before Christmas because getting married in between Christmas and moving to school seemed too stressful to even consider. We briefly thought about getting married during Nathan's spring break in April, but that much time apart seemed kind of stupid, as he would move to a different state and I would still be at home. Besides, April weddings don't fare as well as December ones, so HAH.

  11. Harumph. Don't like this one, we were Married Jan 1st. Maybe I should claim December.
