Word of the Day

bogey , bogy [ˈbəʊgɪ]n
1. an evil or mischievous spirit
2. something that worries or annoys

Use: 'Do you feel better?'
'Oh yes--yes, I do, Gerard. Somehow you've blown all the bogies away.'

I don't know if bogies are any relation to Harry Potter's boggart but am I only one who thinks it's no coincidence that it all sounds like 'boogers'? Gross kids.

When I was a little girl, I used to think that the Boogey Man lived in a dark closet running along an old roof-line in our house. The day I plucked up the courage to run from one end of it to the other was a red letter day.

These days, if something semi-ephemeral bothers me, I am likely to call it a 'brain cloud'.

  1. Funny you should mention boogers, Betty Keira. Bogey is Brit speak for that very thing. (OED: A piece of dried nasal mucus. colloq.).
