  1. Mary Jane is 23; Fabian is 40 AND HER GUARDIAN. Ick factor; I avoid this one myself.

    1. Mary Jane is twenty-two. Did I miss her birthday? I don't care that Fabian is her guardian. For richer, for poorer? It's not as if he needed her money. He is a rich man himself and he has a profession, well-paid,too, he is not likely to give up after they get married in order to live off her riches. And anyway, since there are no prenuptial agreements in Neelsdom, half of his worldly goods will be hers upon marriage - so there.
You cannot seriously expect the man to wait until she is thirty before declaring himself.

  2. Harlequin was always big on the guardian thing. One in particular where he was her stepbrother AND her guardian. Double ick. Icko profundus. Fac me cocleario vomere.

  3. Betty Barbara here--
Just about the worst Betty book out there. The squick factor with their ages and relationship is one part of it. But his behavior towards her at the beginning---cold as ice barely begins to describe it. This rated 'bottom of the empty can of tinned soup' for me.

  5. Bottom 10 of the Betty books for me too. It's one I've read only once. I always think I should read it one more time. I pick it up, look at it, then put it back.

    1. No, no, no, no, no! This is your reading assignment for the next couple of days. Homework! So you can form an opinion and join the discussion. Much better than just reading the comments intelligently.

    2. All right, but this one will be an e-book -- not going to hunt for a vintage copy of this one on Amazon for my Betty shelf.

    3. There's a download on scribd.com. You can read about Mary Jane and van der Blocqhead for free :)

    4. Hélas! One must be a premium member of Scribd to download said work (at least that's what they told me). I guess this will be a pleasure all the greater for being deferred... :)

    5. I think you should read the book for yourself before passing judgment. I am not saying it's a favourite of mine but I do like the story.

  7. Hey, what happened to our blog?
Where is our beautiful turquoise colour?
    Our patterned background has vanished.
Why is there a link to "The Cutest Blog ON THE BLOCK"?

Just found the new background ... ehem ... But it is turquoise.

    3. Betty Suzanne inspired me to change out the background. Blogger has quite a few backgrounds, but I didn't find anything that I loved - so I went over to The Cutest Blog on the Block. They have a ton of free backgrounds including this lovely one.

    4. I hate to say it but the striped borders look like two girls in striped bikini tops leaning over the edge of the page if you know what I mean and I think you do...

    5. The screen is doing weird things when I look at the blog on my tablet and also on my Kindle. I end up with black areas and gray areas as I scroll down. I haven't looked on the desktop computer. Is this happening to anyone else?

    6. I only see the black and grey areas when the page is loading (also when I hit the publish button and the page reloads) and only in Firefox, not in Internet Explorer.

    7. The blog looks ok on the desktop. The tablet and Kindle are jumbled looking, but I can still read it. Dunno.

  8. Last night I was watching television but I had left my computer on and did a little "globe watching" on the side, you know, the Conquering the World widget, when all of a sudden – bling, bling, bling, bling- four Swedes (and I don’t mean the turnip-y kind) showed up in less than a minute! Three of them from the same county, Kalmar län (Kalmar County)! But wait, there is more! I started counting. Two Swedes followed shortly after, and about an hour later, another four peppered the screen within two minutes. Within 51 minutes a total of eleven Swedes had come online. One without place name, and out of the remaining ten with place names, seven were from the same county, Kalmar län! Astonishing!

Recap: Swedes by the Numbers ( title partially purloined from / totally inspired by The Original: Betty by the Numbers™ – © Betty van den Betsy)

Out of 35 different places appearing on the globe (while I payed attention), 11 (or 31%) were from Sweden.
Out of 11 Swedes coming online, 7 (or 64%) were from Kalmar County, 1 (or 9%) from Stockholm County, 1 (or 9%) from Lund in SkÃ¥ne County/Scania County, Sweden’s southernmost county, 1 (or 9%) from Sweden’s second largest city, Göteborg, or Gothenburg in English, in Västra Götaland County, and 1 (or 9%) from I-don’t-know-where in Sweden.

    1. I wonder what was on TV, or in the news, that made them all search the same phrase at the same time to make them all hit this blog? I don't think there was a sudden Neels fever epidemic.

    2. According to the Swedish tv guide MTV ran the first season of Jersey Shore (2009) all through the night. The first Swede appeared on the globe at 21:43 CET (9:43 p.m. CET), that would have been just after the second episode.

      • 20:00 Jersey shore
      • 20:55 Jersey shore
      • 21:45 Jersey shore
      • 22:35 Jersey shore
      • 23:30 Jersey shore
      • 00:20 Jersey shore
      • 01:10 Jersey shore
      • 02:00 Jersey shore
      • 02:50 Jersey shore
      • 03:40 Jersey shore
      • 04:25 Jersey shore

Red Pen: Did I write an hour later? Should have been a quarter hour, really more like 10 minutes.
