We are skating on very thin ice now, Betties. Round Two was finished in spectacular fashion with some heartbreaking losses (at least, they are for me).
Polly didn't survive the juggernaut of
Cassandra By Chance, for instance. She was always doomed but I hold her in great affection. Here is a look at the horrors ahead in the next round.
The Secret Pool vs.
The Little Dragon
The Hasty Marriage vs.
Discovering Daisy
Tabitha in Moonlight vs.
Cassandra By Chance
Roses Have Thorns vs.
Damsel in Green
The Promise of Happiness vs.
bye--no match this week

Chuck shed a single tear. That tear throat-punched the spreadsheet that broke a Betty's heart. |
There were two Unfortunate Ties I had to break and, like a woman of courage, I made Betty Debbie disappoint the assembled Betties. She chose
The Secret Pool over
Always and Forever ("
The Secret Pool is the only one that makes me cry--so much PATHOS!
Always and Forever has York but I find the step-father creepy."). In the other match-up she chose
The Little Dragon over
The End of the Rainbow (she admitted that it was a harder decision and in the end went with
The Little Dragon...and then she sent me a GIF of Chuck Norris punching things. This is hard, you guys.)
I moved
Roses Have Thorns into a match-up for next time and gave
The Promise of Happiness (or Becky and the Baron, the Hot, Hot, Baron) a bye.
I've made the decision to put off a wildcard vote until after the third round. We're going to really need it. And so on to
The Barfing on His Brogues Bracket (Round 3)!
Oh, dear.

Good luck breaking these ties. You Hanna-Betties are the besties!

A Girl to Love
This group proved surprisingly easy for me. Dearest Love is a walkover over just about any other Neels book to me. A Girl to Love is charming in its almost anti-Betty ways (a non-doctor hero? who works in television? and drinks? I love the scene where he goes to visit the vicar to make sure Sadie isn't going to be gossiped about due to her live-in job with him. Makings of a good Neels hero there, under the huh? surface)

I do love Max and Sophy - it was a tough choice, but Sister Peters is just the quintessential Betty for me; it has EVERYTHING.
Next: Bookworm v. plunger. That was even more difficult as I adore both books, but I chose Magic in Vienna because I doubt it will get many votes.
I was meh about Girl with Green Eyes and Vicar's Daughter, but Lucy is just a bit too passive for me and Margo is plucky and I love the attic scene.
I am not as big a fan of A Girl to Love as many of the Betties, and I just love Philly dumping sausages in Veronica's lap and the momentous gaze between Philly and James, so that was an easy vote.
I pity whichever book is pitted against Caroline's Waterloo and envision an eventual showdown between CW and The Promise of Happiness.
dancing a little jig Only two of my choices were wiped out! Yay!

Blow Hot, Blow Cold is also a favourite, but, sadly, I couldn't vote for both, so it had to be Sister Peters. All the rest was a piece of cake. With lashings of cream.
Betty Barbara here, shedding copious tears. How Betty Debbie could pick that lying rug Jereon over Waldo is beyond my comprehension. Argggghhhh!!!

Happily, all of my choices made it through this round! It is becoming tougher, though...

The most difficult choice this time was between an Ordinary Girl and a Girl to Love. I chose the latter because I was actually reading it last night and for no other reason.
