The match-up was between Never Say Goodbye (which I hold in enormous affection. I am always dinging for Heaven is Gentle for being so dreary up in Scotland but this one goes to bleak Communist Poland and I am ALL IN for that The Amber Necklace of Unspoken Passion Resting Underneath the Twin-set of Stoicism.) and Matilda's Wedding (Which I gave the win to because of the plastic chamber pot she buys for the doctor's waiting room, because she has to shower at the pub during the village sickness, but mostly for that image of her sweeping rubbish in the wind on her front porch with a bit of sack tied around her waist as the doctor speeds by.)
Steve knew it was a crap shoot. Steve understands what you had to do. |
Another of the books it makes me really sad to see drop out is A Kiss for Julie which I have in large print. Because of this, I am not sure it hasn't made me super-biased. But I love the clothes she cobbles together and the projectile she hurtles at the head of an intruder. Good stuff. (Sniff. In happier news, Tillamook just came out with a special batch of Oregon Strawberry Lemonade. I'm going to polish off this gallon and get some more. I just looked at Dearest Mary Jane and can. not. with this.)
We're moving on to the final bracket of this round: The Imperiled Poppets Bracket (Round Two). There are some match-ups in there that suggest I start putting quantites of ice cream into food storage for the duration. Have fun!

bye--no match this week
Some where so easy: The Hasty Marriage, The Promise of Happiness, Damsel in Green
Others were harder: The Little Dragon vs. The End of the Rainbow. TLD is funnier, more light-hearted, so even though I have loved TEotR ever since I first read it, this time my vote goes to the little 🐲
I Amabel-iever in justice. Which is why I could not vote Ffor Always and Fforever but had to go with The Secret Pool.
The most difficult choice was Polly vs. Cassandra. Arrrghhhhh! — tearing her hair out
I ♥ Polly! — And, yet, the first part of Cassandra is so totally awesome!
Polly & Sam or Cassandra & the Ogre? Arrrghhhhh!
You are so Ffunny, Betty Anonymous!

This was an easy bracket for me and I can't foresee any heartache after the votes are tallied unless for some weird reason all the Betties suddenly decide Once For All Time is their favorite. *shudders at the thought*
I'm still bleeding from last week's voting. I can't believe everyBetty doesn't love Duert and Chrissy as much as I do. *sniff sniff*
I'm shocked too. Can't believe they are gone.

This was an easy one for me. Mostly no-brainer choices (Tabitha, Cassandra) and only two "Which was that one again?" choices to be made.

Fairly easy choices this week. I'll be sorry to see Polly go but she has no chance against Cassandra and many others at any stage, so it might as well be now.
I am afraid I am one of those who voted Duert and Chrissy out. I like them as a couple but Chrissy just doesn't hold up as a character for me. She takes too long to work out which brother she loves, and later in life (the next book) even though she was supposedly an excellent nurse she can't even cope with her own child's illnesses. I imagine her turning into a "poor little me" mother after Duert passes away and stops looking after her, and making her children's lives awful.
Betty Barb in Montana--my votes are almost identical to Betty Barb in Maryland, which made me oddly happy.

As far in as we are, I was surprised that this bracket wasn't harder. Secret Pool is too sloppily sentimental for me (although I don't dislike it), and I've already stated my case on Little Dragon. The only difficult one for me was Once for All time vs Promise of Happiness, both of which I love, both top dozen. *sheepishly admits* the way I decided was to match up with the other Betty Barb, although we disagree on Polly, which was the first one I read, vs Cassandra, which is "only" top 20 for me.
I'm happy to have been of service! Re: Polly--I totally understand a fond loyalty to one's first Betty book. Alas,I can no longer remember what mine was. The one that stuck in my mind for years and years (and prompted me to start re-reading TGB) was 'The End of the Rainbow'.
