Wherein I Make a Valiant Effort...

...to list the collected works of Betty Neels.

I sat down this morning and typed up a list of Betty Neels novels (see sidebar). It's a tough proposition. I wish I could've just copied and pasted from one source, but I really didn't want to include a list of all of her collaborative books and omnibus collections.

I don't know if I got all her books...according to Wikipedia, La Neels wrote a total of 134 books...but I came up with 138 titles. I'm not sure if they're counting some of her slightly shorter stories that were included in omnibus books. Some stories have different British titles - although I think I was able to sort through those. The dates and order are not definitive...but they give a general sense of when Betty published the books. Sometimes I had the British copywrite date to go by, sometimes the U.S. copywrite date.

...again, it's not a definitive list...more like a guideline.

  1. Excellent wrap-jersey you've got there. I presume it could be wadded up anyhow and tossed in a plastic sack for transport across the English Channel.

Also, I love that picture you posted of Grandma. Can we refer to her as Betty Hellen, do you suppose?

  2. Hi! I love this site. Have you ladies created a map of all inter-related Betty Neels books yet? I did click the "crossover characters" tag but couldn't find a comprehensive list. I've only read about half of Betty's books, and I have arrows all over the place on my hardcopy list of the 134 books.

  3. Dear Betty Lulu,
There's a great site that you should check out:
here. This wonderful lady has listed all of the Betty Neels books in order and includes a brief synopsis, names of main characters and crossover characters. Frankly, it's a ton more work than I have time for. I'm just grateful for those who did take the time and energy to accomplish what I could not.
    Love and lardy cakes,
    Betty Debbie

p.s. What's your favorite Neels so far?

  4. Betty Debbie, thanks for pointing me to that site. I've visited before but wasn't reading the synopses carefully enough. :( I think my favorite Neels so far is "Caroline's Waterloo."

  5. Well, there. We have a new Betty with sense and good judgement. Also, our first Betty Lulu. Score.

  6. I adore Caroline's Waterloo!

Betty Lulu, if you don't mind me asking, where do you call home? (feel free to be as vague or specific as you feel comfortable being - or don't answer at all)

  7. I'm feeling giddy with delight at being called "Betty Lulu"! Thanks for making me feel welcome. A little about me: I call New Jersey home, I'm on the wrong end of my thirties, and I was introduced to my first Betty Neels in 2004 by my mother-in-law. It was the "Christmas to Remember" anthology ("Mistletoe Kiss" and "Roses for Christmas"). I'm hooked ever since and have about half of the 134. I haven't read many posts here yet. I see you have 43 Bettys--with at least one being male! (What are they called?)

  8. Well, we do have a 'Betty Henry' and a 'Betty Ross'...

We usually refer to our guys as Mijnheer or Professor or Doctor whatever. For instance, I'm married to Dr. van der Stevejinck and Betty Keira is married to Mijnheer van Voorhees (both totally made up names).

  9. Hi Betty Lulu! I'm still giggling about the awesomeness of this site!!! I'm married to Dr Lynnderlynk!

  10. Well, let's see -- Betty Henry would be Mijnheer Henrik Blanken de Wit and I have no idea what Betty Ross would be. Betty Henry's an honorary Betty because he attended Bettysday last year, but Betty Ross is a bit more active. (Even if he never comments. But then he never comments anywhere, so the Founding Bettys shouldn't take that personally...)

  11. I'll have to ask my husband to come up with a name for himself. (He's more clever at that sort of thing). He fondly tolerates my love of Betty Neels books and often allows me to read newly-bought Betty books aloud in a British accent whenever we drive anywhere. I do get a large share of teasing (same characters, same plots, etc.), but I daresay he secretly enjoys the stories.

  12. Oooh, you've got a treasure there Betty Lulu! My guy is Prof. Vue der Plane (he's very into his Saturn and R.C. aircraft and is former Air Force.) My sweetie will patiently listen to me summarize the plots, when I know He'd rather me read the Brightonish book excerpts. LOL
I got to know Betty through my Eldest daughter, she's not a member here, but I've just sent her four Betty Books to her in Alaska, where she's a Nat'l park ranger. Actually all three of my daughters (aged 15 to 30) love the Betty's too. The guys have gotten used to the whole idea and joke about it (The prof and the three Mihnjeers). I'm in southern Michigan. Sure wish there were more Betty's near me! All the PA Betty's get to have the fun!
Welcome to the group. Hope you love it here as much as the rest of us!

  13. This is a good thread for me to post a comment on because I've used your comprehensive list a few times; very handy especially when looking through a bin of secondhand books! Anyway, I enjoy y'all's blog thoroughly and I thank you for creating it and maintaining it!
