Round Two: Vertically Challenged

Results from the last round:

Esmeralda beat A Little Moonlight
Gem of a Girl beat Romantic Encounter
I was the tie-breaking vote in favor of Pineapple Girl over The Quiet Professor (though I don't really like either of them terribly much)
An Old-Fashioned Girl beat The Little Dragon (tears!)
and
Never While the Grass Grows beat A Valentine for Daisy
5' 7"  I don't care how nutty you are, if you're a successful actor at 5'7", they should give you a special Oscar every year.

As you can see, the late canon is falling pretty consistently to the earlier stuff.  An Old-Fashioned Girl was the only survivor from that section...
5'7"  James McAvoy handed out a six inch handicap to Hollywood and they still can't manage to out-smoulder.

Plans are in the works for a bracket system (not to be implemented until after Round Two has cleared my decks) so that I don't mess up the highly-precise and clean-lined perfection of the current system.

Ahem.
So now on to the next sections (6 vs. 14) which I will mix up a bit as one section has more than the other:

Not Once But Twice vs. Matilda's Wedding
An Apple From Eve vs. Dearest Eulalia
A Girl to Love vs. An Ordinary Girl
and
A Dream Came True vs. Midsummer Star (which come from the same section and were published consecutively)

5'5"  Are we allowed to ogle Harry Potter?

    1. Oh blarg. I'll fix them in the post. That'll teach me to blog and parent at the same time... ;0)

    2. If you decide you have to give up one of them (blogging or parenting), please put the choice to a vote on this site.

  3. Not Once But Twice No competition there. One of my top favourites.
An Apple Core from Phemie Love it!

And now we get to the difficult part. I'll not say, "What were you thinking pairing these two?". No, I'll not say that. I like them both. But I think I got more enjoyment out of A Girl to Love.
A Dream Came True I like Oliver but Alexander Cator - the name alone - is so cool.

  4. Betty Barbara here--

Well, I found the results for the previous round to be disappointing. Sniff. Maybe my picks for this section will win through.

    Matilda's Wedding--that one was easy.
An Apple for Eve wins the battle of the girls with the unfortunate names.
    Girl to Love--another easy one.
Dream Come True-love the helicopter rescue!

You left out Michael J Fox, who was a cutie and at 5'4"(standing on tip-toe, I believe)certainly qualifies. And for the oldsters amongst us, there was Alan Ladd, shown here as 'Shane'. He was a notoriously height challenged leading man, generally accepted to have been 5'6".

    1. And Mickey Rooney who was 5'2" and still married Ava Gardner...That takes skill.

    2. Fess Parker supposedly had his first role opposite Alan Ladd. He played the scenes on his knees!

(Hey, have we had any gratuitous Fess Parker lately?)

Rooney was married seven times after Gardner; I'm not sure what skill that is, but he served under Patton in WWII so maybe his marriages prepared him for combat....

      Gratuitous Fess Parker!!
As a child I shook hands with Fess Parker (must have been 1955 or '56). Anyway, he was touring, doing publicity for "Davy Crockett" at the time. So he seemed HUGE to me. (He's usually listed at 6'5" or 6'6")

    4. Ah, now there's an RDD. Thanks, Betty Barbara! Fess Parker was a history major and football player at my alma mater (Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas) prior to his transfer to the University of Texas. Where was that space-time continuum thing when I needed it?

  5. I think I missed something, how did we get started on all this short stuff?
    Matilda's Wedding
    Dearest Eulalia
    An Ordinary Girl
    A Dream Came True

All these borderline personality disorder-neurotic-sociopathic-poor little me mothers are giving me a headache.

  6. Nooooooo.....

    *Matilda's Wedding

    *An Apple from Eve

***Ooohhhhhh...the agony! An Ordinary Girl. It's #7 on my top 10. Something about the looking at each other and just knowing something special happened just makes me catch my breath. But I do so love Sadie. Sorry, Sadie.

    *A Dream Came True

  7. Boy, I'm having as tough a time with the ones I'm not crazy about as I am with the ones I love!! Some of these present a quandary!

    Not Once but Twice
An Apple from Eve The other story is lovely too.
    An Ordinary Girl
I liked Midsummer Star a lot, but the Hillary bit at the END of the story put me off, so A Girl to Love it is!

  8. I'm still sulking that Tom Cruise is supposed to play Jack Reacher (of the Lee Child series). Reacher is 6'5" and blond and mid-thirties. Tom Cruise is...not.

On the other hand, Phillip Seymour Hoffman (who's tall) played Truman Capote. How they do that? ALL the extras were super-tall. True story.

    Midsummer Star

One of these days (yeah, right, a day on which I have free time, like that will happen) I'm going to rename three-quarters of the Canon so that I can recall a book from the title. So, Midsummer Star would be "The Bed & Breakfast One" and A Dream Came True becomes "The One with the Helicopter" and so forth. This voting process would be SO much faster that way.
