Round One: Section Seven Results, Section Eight Voting

Betty Mary was happy to provide the inspiration for our bi-weekly cheesecake (yes, it's still cheesecake):

Hi Keira,
I wanted to give you some more Cheesecake photo's to use in case you need to influence the voting. ;-)
After two weeks of following the iditarod in the High School Special Ed class that I aide in, I have fallen in love with this team of Father/Son. (Martin and Rohn Buser, sounds like boozer) Dad is actually Swiss, the kid was born in Alaska. This is how I will picture all my dark haired RDD's and the odd young dutch doctor or not so feckless brother.
We kept charts on their speed and the weather etc.  We all had to choose a musher and I picked Dallas, never thinking a 25 y.old would win.
And guess what! I picked the winner of the race.
My co-worker picked Martin (RDD look-alike). He's won 4 races in the past but, unfortunately he came in 19th this year, one second behind his son. What a good dad! Darn it they are both so cute!

Martin Buser looks like he could mush the torturous 700 mile trail to the heart of Araminta Rose Isobel Comely Fairchild.
Section Seven was full of Nevers.  Let's see how things shook out:

Never Say Goodbye (or Betty goes to Poland) beat the more laggardly Never Too Late  (Yay!  This was a happy result for me!)
Once For All Time edged out Year's Happy Ending
Polly beat Heidelberg Wedding (I love both but I think this is probably pretty correct.  But ask me tomorrow if you want another answer.)
At the End of the Day hammered on A Summer Idyll (one vote)
and
Never the Time and the Place trounced Magic in Vienna  (I think I remember liking the loser better.)
Rohn Buser could use some time and seasoning but I'm patient.  I'll wait...

Now let's serve up our next joint to carve up and consume:

A Girl Named Rose vs. Two Weeks to Remember
The Secret Pool vs. Stormy Springtime
Off With the Old Love vs. A Doubtful Marriage
A Gentle Awakening vs. The Course of True Love
When Two Paths Meet vs. Paradise For Two

I actually watched a Netfix streaming series a month or so back on the Iditarod that prominently features this dreamy pair.  Iditarod: The Toughest Race on Earth

  1. A Girl Named Rose...featuring Gold Medalist Rose Comely
The Secret Pool...as in pools of tears
Off With the Old Love...especially when he's a television producing creep
A Gentle Awakening...Florina speaks better Dutch than Sir William, plus she's handy with a pitcher of lemonade.
When Two Paths Meet...love at first sight.

  3. Betty Barbara here--
I am fascinated by the Iditarod--growing up, as I did, in Hawaii!
Why choose snow, ice, lots of large, hungry dogs when there are tropical beaches!!??!?!
    And now--to the voting:
Well, the first one is easy,peasy--A Girl Named Rose
Stormy Springtime--yeah, Secret Pool is a weeper--but I always hated that I cried and I didn't believe the romance At All.
Off With the Old Love by a bare whisker (or maybe a coin toss) over A Doubtful Marriage
    Gentle Awakening--Florina is too cool

  5. Betty Keira,
The Cheesecake Factory is going to be after you for copyright infringement (ha-ha). Google "Marco van Basten" if you want to see some Dutchcake. Dutch footballer-voted one of the "Greatest Dutchmen". One of the greatest looking for sure.

Are we getting off topic or is this all innocent research into our beloved Betty's adopted land?

We have to add him to our RDD collection. (It sure is handy having Betty von Susie around.)

    2. Ex-soccer player, ex-national team coach, and as of July 1, 2012 he'll be head coach of SC Heerenveen - which happens to be in Friesland. Unfortunately for you, he's past the due date for RDDs.

    3. Yowza! Born 1964 (and married), he's a tall and lean 188cm and 80 kg, or 6'2" and 176 pounds. One can picture him pressing his vast 13 stone against one as an angry crowd surges past, chanting. And the picture is not unpleasant...

    4. I second that motion. Yuuuuuum! He looks like he's about to administer a local and stitch up a nasty gash!

    5. I was born in 1964 also, let's not hear any more of that "past the due date" stuff, ha ha.

    1. A Girl Named Rose—can’t go against Gold Medallist Rose although I like Two Weeks

The Secret Pool vs. Stormy Springtime--The Mouse Bride by a squeaker (although the maudlin factor almost does it in for me)

Off With the Old Love vs. A Doubtful Marriage--I like Doubtful, but I love Radmer.

A Gentle Awakening vs. The Course of True Love--Florina and the lemonade scene

When Two Paths Meet vs. Paradise For Two--Paradise might have prevailed except not ever finding out what the gardener said drives me crazy (I still think we should have a contest.)

  9. Quick! I gotta get these votes in quick before Betty Keira moves us inexorably on... (Anyone else watching Frozen Planet? Watching a glacier churn mountains makes me think of a few people I know...no, not Betty Keira. Other people. Non-TUJD people. Bettys are unfailingly polite and gracious.)

A Girl Named Rose -- I'm afraid the Norway/Scandinavia travel books will always lose to a Classic Betty
The next battle is close, but I'm giving it to Stormy Springtime. The Secret Pool is so very personal; I feel sure The Great Betty was working through some grief issues of her own. That doesn't make it a good book or a bad book, just a very personal book. It's like going to the funeral of someone I barely knew: I want to pay my respects and leave quietly.
OWTOL vs. A Doubtful Marriage. Hmmm. I'm not much of a fan of the "Oooh, Wilbur" plot device where the heroine falls for a guy the rest of us would have seen through in moments. Wilbur is the male Veronica. It makes the heroine look like a ninny, frankly. (I exempt those heroines who had been seriously dating Houseman Nick for a while. There's no "serious dating" going on with "Oooh, Wilbur" plots. The heroine thinks, "Wow, a Wilbur likes me!" and I'm embarrassed for her.) So I'll go with A Doubtful Marriage on doctrinal grounds.
A Gentle Awakening -- I love Florina & all that domesticity.
When Two Paths Meet. Very few books could make me vote for Paradise for Two (one of The Great Betty's few blunders was not telling us what Haso said to Prudence in Dutch when they first meet), and When Two Paths Meet (which I like for its Getting Out From Under The Abuse Siblings aspects; Dodie might be the 600-pound gorilla, but Henry & Joyce are TWO 600-pound gorillas) is nowhere near that bad.

  10. via email:

This listing included one of my top favorites. Here are my votes:

    Rose
Secret Pool (yes, I know I'm being manipulated, but I enjoyed it!)
    Doubtful Marriage
    Gentle Awakening
Paradise for Two (by a nose)

A Gentle Awakening is one of my very favorites. Of course some parts are improbable, but I just love the cooking! While she is tireless in the kitchen, I'm wondering how much faster she is than I am at the cleaning up of the pots, pans, and mixing bowls. Oh, yes, sometimes someone from the village does that part! I've made a few wedding cakes in my home kitchen with friends for staff; wow, what a difference to my personal stamina when someone else does the clearing up.

One key to her cooking with all the children littered about the countertops is that she has no need to consult any recipes for her dishes. She knows exactly how to whip up the scones or mix a cake because she has made those recipes thousands of times. I can do that myself with my mother's cornbread and several cake recipes. Sauces and veggies? Easy as pie. Remember that she was a professional cook at a hotel kitchen, hardly a quiet, peaceful work environment compared to the home kitchen at my address. Having children about is probably quieter. I'll now climb off my soap box, return to the kitchen (sans Aga, alas), and finish up the substantial fruitcake I'm taking to morning coffee at church this Sunday.
