Round One: Section Three Results and Section Four Voting

The Magic of Living blasted Cruise to a Wedding (no votes!) out of the water.
The End of the Rainbow whispered past A Small Slice of Summer.  (In the event of a tie, I cast a tie-breaking vote (You'll notice that I don't vote regularly, so my vote is just one vote.).  I am not unlike the babe-alicious Harry S Truman of The Uncrushable Jersey Dress.)
Other than breaking the occasional Senatorial deadlock, “the vice presidency is not worth a bucket of warm spit.” .

Henrietta's Own Castle beat out A Star Looks Down mostly on the strength of a strategic wall climb.
The Moon for Lavinia routed Cobweb Morning (as it should, really.  The delightful daydream of little boys in Wellington boots is not enough to outweigh a psychopath.)
and
I cast another tie-breaker for Roses for Christmas over Heaven is Gentle (whose heroine does something considered TSTL (too stupid to live) by hiking up a hill to her doom and whose atmosphere is as damp and wracked as those Nissen huts.)

Now on to Section Four Voting which brings some personal heartbreak my way:

The Edge of Winter vs. Esmeralda
A Gem of a Girl vs. Grasp a Nettle
A Matter of Chance vs. Pineapple Girl
The Little Dragon vs. The Hasty Marriage
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sob.  Democracy is so hard.
AND
Britannia All at Sea vs. Never While the Grass Grows

Alright ladies, it's time to do your duty.  Votes for Women!

  1. Me again? Oh, all right.

Hey, Betty Keira -- could you announce with each post when the voting officially stops? I would have had Betty Ross vote before he left for yoga if I'd known. Enh, That Man will lose in the end. I fear not.

    Okay, here goes:
    Esmeralda
    Gem of a Girl
    The Little Dragon
    Pineapple Girl
    Never While the Grass Grows

I will admit I had to peek at some of the reviews. We've clearly entered The Great Betty's "What Are You Going To Do with Your Royalties, Mrs. Neels?" "I'm Going on a Cruise!" years.

Not her best books, in my humble...oh, you know the acronym.

  2. So, here's my schedule. I post on Tuesday and Friday. As long as the Results post isn't up, the voting still continues...

    1. Well, I *was* hoping for a "The Polls Close at XX:00 PST" or something a bit more specific, but that's okay. I suppose you might have like, a Real Life and all.

      :-)

    2. hahahaha...If you only knew. My youngest pledge of conjugal affection has a chronic hacking cough for many of the winter months (lucky me!) and so I stick pretty close to home unless I want to have angry women of all ages berating me for bad citizenship and crummy motherhood. So, I go grocery shopping late at night and glower at the front door.

P.S. The old men at Home Depot never yell at me.

    3. You have my undying sympathy. I had to go to the UK for Betty Ross's mother's funeral (she'd been ill for years, died peacefully at home, she'd had a full life, it's a blessing, etc.) and I got The Dreaded Lurgi (Britspeak for the nasty viral thing; it's from The Goon Show) and I felt like death for a few days.

A chronic hacking cough for much of the winter? You ARE a saint.

    4. Saint Betty Keira. That's me. ;0)

Poor Betty Debbie visited two weeks ago and caught The Zac (she named it for him! Yes, it's just a wicked cold but with my Little Pledge each cold becomes The Month-Long Croup.) and she's just barely been able to dredge herself through an astonishing number of air flights. She has a death rattle still--all this time later--and I feel horrible every time we speak.

Pass my condolences on to Betty Ross. Even expected and welcome passings aren't a simple thing. So wish him all our best from TUJD.

  3. Esmerelda
    Gem of a Girl
    A Matter of Chance
The Little Dragon (I shall allow you two hats a year) so cute.
    Never While the Grass Grows.

Please keep the Dutch royal family in your prayers and thoughts as they await news on Prince(Johan)Friso. For those who haven't been follwing the story, he is in a coma after being buried in an avalanche while skiing last month

  4. Betty Barbara here--

Well, 8 of these were so memorable that I had to re-read the reviews! And even then, the details would slither right out of my memory. So, obviously, these were not among The Betty's best.

Esmerelda(her foot beats the awful ending of Edge)
    Gem of a Girl(coin toss)
    Pineapple Girl (coin toss)
The Hasty Marriage (really hated Little Dragon)
Britannia All at Sea (coin toss)

    1. Betty Keira--
See, I voted for Hasty Marriage! It is one of my guilty pleasure books. Reilof may be a rat (I call him Rat-lof when I read), but he's the rat that Joyce wants and she goes after him and gets him.

    2. ANyone who considers The Hasty Marriage a pleasure (guilty or otherwise) is a friend to Betty Keira. ;0)

Love it! That's a really good one.

  5. I'm pouting over Heaven Is Gentle! But onward.... I must say that some of the books in this bracket are not my favorites.

*Esmeralda (although I like The Edge of Winter too)

    *Gem of a Girl

*Pineapple Girl (I laugh every time poor Eloise falls and the pineapple lands on the RDD's large, well-shod foot. I just think it's cute. Then her friends ask her why she looks like someone dragged her through a hedge backwards. What a way to meet.)

*The Little Dragon - I am not crazy about this book because of the household help sneaking around, but The Hasty Marriage is probably my least favorite Betty Book.

*Britannia All at Sea - I've always loved this one.

    1. Replying to myself... Eloise falls only once. I laugh each time I read the book at that part. Sheesh.

Arrgh! I so much want to vote for Hasty Marriage can't because I haven't read Little Dragon. I LOVE the Hasty Marriage. Oh well. At least I can vote for....
Britannia All at Sea (another favorite)

  9. via email:

Thank you for posting these votes for me.

Esmerelda (I hate that Tante Maybella gets off the hook in Edge of Winter. So unrealistic and unjust!)
    Gem of a Girl
    A Matter of Chance
Little Dragon ( love that sheepskin coat!)
    Britannia

    Adrianne
    The Opal Lady

  10. Esmerelda (gimpy herione!)
A Gem of a Girl (the Charlie Briggs Effect!)
Pineapple Girl (I dislike the short shrift given to a recent orphan in A Matter of Chance)
The Hasty Marriage (oh so close! I'm sensing another possible wild card here)
Never While the Grass Grows (I'm a bit of a sucker for a widower with a kid - and this one has my favorite Betty cruise)

  11. The Edge of Winter (although I hate Aunt Maybella being worshipped instead of punished. Why is she not sent off to live elsewhere, like all the other mean aunts and relatives in Neelsdom?)
Gem of a Girl (I've always loved it)
    Pineapple Girl
    The Hasty Marriage (another favourite)
    Never While the Grass Grows

  12. Ok, some I don't reread often, and a favorite!

The Edge of Winter (I dislike less than Emseralda)
    A Gem of a Girl
A Matter of Chance (I searched so long for Pineapple Girl and as disappointed)
The Hasty Marriage (LD, another of my least favorites)
    Never While Grass Grows.
