She had no luck but the doctor did and she tucked the furry toy under one arm and when invited, had a session on the dodgems. It was rather a tight squeeze, the pair of them in the little car and it made more room when the doctor put his arm around her.

Maybe you, like me, must commit yourself to read and review half of the Betty Neels canon in a year and a half (and be eating, drinking and swimming in the world of La Neels) to truly appreciate what manna from heaven an excerpt like this is. Rich Dutch doctors do not go to fun fairs (at least, not without a little sister in tow). They do not win stuffed animals. They do not intentionally crash cars (even bumper ones) into other cars.
I can not help but think that this dodgem ride was the one and only in history where the little car didn' dare misbehave and instead cruised in a socking and well-bred manner around the melee'.

  1. I immediately knew what DodgeEms was because that's the name for the bumper cars at our local darling vintage amusement park. I don't think Professor van der Hertenzoon and I can wedge ourselves into the same bumper car anymore. However, on our first date (Holiday in the Park at Six Flags on New Year's Eve) he did cushion all the bumps for me by wrapping his arms about me on the bobsled ride--my dawning realization.
