Bettysday Challenge

One month from tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Betty. One hundred years certainly deserves commemorating, honouring, celebrating...in other words, a party. We here at The Uncrushable Jersey Dress are fully committed to partying. Betty Keira: For you, Bettys! We do it all for you!

Betty Keira and I have been kicking around ideas for a couple of months or so, and have come up with a tentative plan. Much as we would L.O.V.E. to celebrate Bettysday in England or Holland (or both), it's just not feasible at this time of year - it has to do with kids. Kids and school. Betty Keira has three kids schedules to choreograph...(In as elegant a manner as Mickey Mouse in The Magician's Assistant) I've got one high school sophomore (I am so not counting my three college kids...they can take care of their own choreography), plus I teach an early morning class of high school freshmen...five days a week. Betty Keira and I agree that we can handle substitutes for one or two days, but that's it so early in the school year.

So, our plan is to scuttle off for a day or so in the greater Seattle area, find every Brit/Dutch thing we can do (cheap-ish-ly) and do it. Theme clothing will be worn. Passages of La Neels will be ceremoniously recited into the teeth of a mighty gale (it might be raining). Give us crumpets or give us death!

Our challenge is to have all our Bettys commemorate the birth of The Great Betty in some way. Plan your itinerary or observances now, for heaven's sake take pictures when you do it, and when it's over we'll all share. Prizes will be given for Best Memorial Bettysday Plans. Let's do this thing.

  1. Sure wish I could get to Seattle to meet up with you, but alas, it's midweek and very unlikely. However, I have a fellow Neels lover friend, and we have a great tea shop in town. I think we shall go there for high tea (complete with hats) and toast our dear, gentle, Betty.

  3. Yoo hoo, where are our East Coast Bettys? I could manage Philadelphia I think or Washington. York? Lancaster? New Jersey? Some place with high tea?

  4. Hi -- Sorry I'm late to this party!! (Busy days, but I'm planning on getting caught up, promise.)

JoDee -- want to meet in Philadelphia for high tea? The Four Seasons does it very nicely (I went last month for Brit Hub 1.0's birthday) and it's easy for me to get to. But there are other places in Philly -- and there is (or was; it's been a while) a place outside Wilmington Delaware that's actually run by ex-pats. But for a setting worthy of an RDD, I vote for the Four Seasons.

  5. And in other Bettysday news, Betty Ross has prepared a Happy Birthday crossword puzzle!! I just test solved it, and it's lovely. He'll figure out a way that everyone can download it or print it out on Bettysday itself.

  6. I just got my and Betty Debbie's Bettysday T-shirts in the mail and right now I'm making a Bettysday craft that I'll highlight in the coming days.

    I'm having the best time.

  7. Betty Magdalen--
I think I can manage the Four Seasons for tea (the 15th right?). I think I'll come in on Amtrak (the station seems fairly close to the hotel) although I won't be able to get back (weird Amtrak timetables) until Thursday so suggestions for reasonably-priced, within walking distance lodging would be appreciated.

I'll dig out an uncrushable jersey dress and court shoes. Or, should I opt for sensible ones? Hat? Felt? Jaunty brim?

AND Founding Bettys--What Bettysday T-shirts? Are you holding out on us?

  10. Betty JoDee -- I can drive you home (where do you live? -- maybe I should ask you that first) or in the alternative, you can spend the night in the lovely "B & not quite B" we use: my ex-husband's house in South Philly. It's got sufficient guest room space, we traditionally have a very yummy breakfast at the Morning Glory Diner and then we drive him to his office (right next door to The Four Seasons, as it happens) and then can drop you off at 30th Street Station.

On the plus side, it's cheap (i.e., free). On the further plus side, TWO Brit Hubs for the price of one (because, of course, Betty Ross will be there). On the yet further plus side, you will be able to report to the other Bettys about how yes, we're all friends. Please please think about it.

You can contact me through my website: MagdalenBraden.com (there's a contact me form).

  11. Betty Keira -- C'mon, spill: can we get Bettysday t-shirts or can't we? We want 'em, we really want 'em!

  12. I went to customlink.com and made my (and Betty Debbie's shirt) by taking on of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite books and tacking that on the front with a graphic. Repeated the process with Betty Debbie's favorite quote...and I put Bettysday and the date on it. The back just says The Uncrushable...etc.

I put them on really basic black T-shirts. Cost about 30 bucks but they came pretty fast and weren't too difficult to put together. I'll post pics of mine on Tuesday.

  15. Betty Barbara here--
Looks like there will be a Bettysday celebration here in rural Maryland. It had been in doubt when we(several Bettys in the area) learned that the really nice Tea Room in Ellicott City is CLOSED on Wednesdays. But we put our heads together and decided that We Can Do It Ourselves.
Court shoes will probably be worn--there well may be pictorial evidence!

  16. To the t-shirt-phobic Bettys: I noticed the same website does custom aprons (you could use it when you have to do your own "rough work").

  17. I'm all over this - I'm a polymer clay artist. I have my thinking cap in place and I'm planning to make ...something! Maybe tiny ruffled nurses' caps as pins? Or a suitably ugly dog pendant? If I come up with something soon enough I'll post a link to my etsy store for anyone who wants to check 'em out. :)

  18. Yes! I'll be posting a Bettysday craft next week too (not wearable and as I have no etsy store (or time)not buyable) which you will all love.

  19. For my celebration of Betty's Big Day, I'm going to read one Betty a week. While at work, I will sip tea from my trusty travel mug and munch on my hubby's sconces. :) Lou
