Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Betty Keira suggested Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for Cinema Betty this week.  This despite the fact that she's never seen it all the way through. I have. I didn't know until today that the screenplay was written in part by Roald Dahl. I did know that the novel it was based on was written by Ian Fleming. Who are Roald Dahl and Ian Fleming? Roald Dahl is probably most famous for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ian Fleming...Bond, James Bond.
Yeah. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
I'll be one of the first to admit that the storyline of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is verging on bizarre. One thing I do like about the movie is the name of the leading lady's character. Truly Scrumptious.  Much better than Eustacia Crump.  There's just no way to make Crump sound good.  Nope, there's nothing euphonious about it. Crump has got to be the very worst last name in the entire canon.

My favorite Betty Neels heroine's name is Cassandra Darling (from Cassandra By Chance (which has quite possibly my favorite first half of a book in Neeldom)).

What are your favorite/least favorite names?

  1. Betty Barbara here--
Well, you've nailed the two best names, with Cassandra Darling the winner by a mile.

However, the Betty did come up with a few clankers, besides the single worst last name (Crump). There's poor Claribel(the Clown)Brown, the unfortunately named Jenny Wren(poor thing--the name's not actually bad, but...),Prudence Makepeace (recently escaped from something by Hawthorn).
And, of course, her sins on the first name front are legion--Ermentrude, Tilly(both Matilda and Clotilde), Letitia, Eulalia(several times), Sappha and so on and so on.

  2. There's a Mrs. Butt in All Else Confusion too. I wonder if they're related?

  3. Colin's office gal is Butts, I'm quite sure.
And while reading did anyone else's brain immediately say: Her name was Bertha....

  5. Speaking of relations (which we were with the Butt Butts issue) are Florina and Louise Twin Paynes? (A Gentle Awakening & No Need to Say G.Bye, respectively)

  6. Your list of 'native American' names actually sound suspiciously hobbit-ish also.

  7. Bravo, Betty Mary! I adore Lucy Lockitt as well--a smashing name. I'm also a big fan of the 'foot' names--Proudfoot and Lightfoot (it does feel a bit Last of the Mohicans though, I grant you.)

  8. In regards to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the movie has nothing to do with the book, except maybe the car looks the same--Fleming's book is much, much better.

I like Eutacia Crump and Ermentrude (remember her name is a major plot device), but of course my favorite is Eliza Proudfoot (also a plot device)--I think the names were part of The Great Betty's sense of humor.
