  1. Betty Barbara here--
Oh goodie--you are finally going to do my favorite Neels--End of the Rainbow. I Love, love, love this one and I hope y'all do too!

Best line during a grovel--"I should be shot"--her great response--read and find out!

  2. Betty Barbara--
Excellent point on his line--maybe I can figure out another pretend t-shirt.

Two awesome books in one week! Oh phooey, I'll be out-of-town for most of it. I'll try commandeering someone's laptop on the plane. Are there U.S. Marshals on EVERY flight?

  3. I recently got a Kindle e-reader. I'm still struggling to get the hang of having books in digital format. But I swear, if I could get The Canon electronically, I would do it. Then, when you announced a new review, I'd be able to read it ON THE SPOT.

    *sigh*

  4. Update: It would appear that they're issuing The Canon digitally one book a month -- and there are only 11 available so far! Do the math -- we'll all be approximately 10 years older when they're done.

Now here's an opportunity for some beastly Dutch oaths!

Here's the page, if anyone is interested.

  5. I have mixed feelings about digital books...but I know Dr. van der Stevejinck would buy one in a heartbeat - given any flimsy excuse.

That's what I get for being married to an engineer. (To quote Adrian Monk: It's a blessing...and a curse)

  6. Betty Magdalen is working on me about the Kindle, but I just can't, I just can't....Give me paper, or give me death!

  7. I must admit that I've been dabbling in the digital book stuff by downloading ebooks on my laptop -- but it's not been terribly satisfying, I still prefer paper books. I'm curious about electronic readers though, and my husband, the gadget king/software engineer, is sure to get me one in the next year or two. I love him dearly, but he really thinks that I'll prefer electronics to jewelry. I have a very nice laptop/cell phone/televisions, etc. in my house. I love my laptop but I hate talking on my cell phone (I text about once in a blue moon) and I hardly ever watch TV (except Netflix movies, usually old ones). I'll probably grow to love an e-reader too, but I'm not sure I want to even have the opportunity to do it -- something makes want to rebel against abandoning books. That said, let's talk about The End of the Rainbow! I LOVE this book and re-read it whenever I need some escape and/or cheering up. We euthanized our 13-year old dog on Monday, and Rainbow is going on my nightstand, to read on Weds. or Thurs., as my husband is going out of town for work until Saturday, and I know I will be missing my beloved dog who always kept me great company when hubby is away and I have trouble sleeping -- so glad for Betty at times like this.

  8. Oh, sorry to hear about your dog -- 13 is a good age, and I'm sure he lived a great life, but the loss is still unbearable for a while. (I still miss Timmo, a cat I had for too short a time 25 years ago!)

Here's the deal with digital readers: they're still a sliver of the publishing universe, but as a vehicle for books they are growing. I too resisted for a long time, but then the Kindle 3 because cheap enough ($139) and I figure, Oh, what the heck.

So, here I am in Boston (*not* my normal city) and I have 13 books on the Kindle, as well as books in my book bag. The device is awesome; so much better than the Kindle 1 someone lent me a year ago & which I hated.

My challenge is thinking what I want on the Kindle. The answer is, every keeper I already own. Well, duh. That way I'd have all those comfort reads at my fingertips. What would have been really great is if all of Betty Neels books were on the Kindle already, but as I explain above, that's clearly not happening anytime soon.

I currently have my office/craft room floor covered with books -- books waiting to be reshelved; books waiting to be logged in to my TBR lists (and then shelved) and books I don't know what to do with. (You get a lot of free books at RWA National, most of which you wouldn't have bought and don't much want to read. I gather if I were a lot younger I'd be over the moon at the idea of FREE BOOKS but instead all I can think is, "Is it immoral to swap these without having even opened them?")

When I look at those books, I begin to see the appeal of paperless reading. I dunno -- maybe Betty JoDee has a lot more shelf space than I do. If I could know in advance which books I would want to own permanently BEFORE I buy them in paper, I could love my Kindle a lot more. But it doesn't work that way.

    Yet.

  9. Thanks for the kind words Betty Magdalen. Missing my husband and my dog tonight -- time to jump into TEOTR!

  10. I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your four legged child. It's so tough.
TEOTR is one of favorites as well. So anxious to see all your reviews and responses!!
I don't think I've reread RIATC since the first time. Have to dig it out.

  11. Oh by the way, I have an extra copy of The End of the Rainbow to share with someone if anyone doesn't have it.
