Pet Quarantine

In the world of Neels, it's not a problem to take Bertie or Pooch to Holland. Put them in the back of your Rolls Royce Corniche and off you go. Bringing them back...not so easy. There are quarantine fees (which means there is a quarantine period). I wonder if The Venerable Neels had pets in Holland and had to put them in quarantine when she and her DH (Dutch Husband) moved back to England? Let's just add that to the questions we'd like to ask...if ever given the opportunity.
Have you ever had to put a pet in quarantine? If so, how long? If not, how would you feel about putting your best friend in the hoosegow, perhaps for months (which, in dog years, would be years...)?

No wonder Becky Araminta Victoria Dawlish Darling quails at the thought.

  1. Barbara here--
The only quarantine system I am even vaguely familiar with is the one in Hawai'i. 120 days, unless you are bringing in a pre-certified pet (lots of paper work) or a pet that has spent at least 6 months in Australia, NZ or GB immediately prior to coming to Hawai'i. Fees: yes, oh my! The full 120 day program is over $1000 per pet, NO multiple pet discount. But you can go out and visit your pet!
The quarantine program in Hawai'i was established in the early 1900's and has kept Hawai'i rabies free, so it does work.

  2. Never had to deal with quarantining a pet, but it's been one of those details about going to the UK that's caught my imagination over the years.

My sister-in-law and her husband live outside London but his dad lives in Germany. I asked about their newly-acquired Jack Russell terrier, Tessie, and travel to and from the UK. Nicky says once they get that six-month certificate Betty Barbara is talking about, Tessie will be able to travel with them.

Here's a tip for pet owners traveling with Bertie/Lucky/Caesar/Tibs within the US: bring all the pooch's documentation with you. We drove from Pennsylvania to Florida so Mimi, our dog, could have a playdate with my friend Sharyn's dog, Miz Cedar. Well, one of the newly constructed, "pet-friendly" hotels checked us into a room infested with fleas, so Mimi needed an immediate flea bath. Not without her certificate from the vet, they wouldn't! Luckily the vet was able to fax it to the pet groomers...

Now we know: if she comes with us, it comes with us.

Oh, and sadly, Miz Cedar wouldn't play with Mimi; too large an age difference. That's okay, Mimi had a blast. All except the ocean: she's not fond of water, and water that chases her? Oh no!
